Post subject: | Who Controversy |
The Who, or what's left of them in Daltrey and Townsend, fired Zak Starkey, the band's drummer (and son of Ringo Starr) for the last 29 years after their most recent performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London about two weeks ago. Toward the end of the show they played something they had never played before as a group in "The Song is Over", one of the greatest songs and best off of Who's Next. About a third of the way into the song, Daltrey came back into the song too early with his vocals with a verse that was out of the place. He had the song come to a halt, upon which he threw at fit for the drums being too loud in his earpiece. They soon restarted the song and they completed it without further incident. Starkey was in no way at fault in the song. It was Daltrey who mistimed his vocal entry with the chorus, and then he blames Zak and scapegoated him for messing up the song. Having listened to the Who and the Song is Over for a long time, going back to the early 90s in college, I thought the band looked and sounded under-rehearsed. Daltrey pathetically held a coffee cup in his hand like it was a run-through and not live. Not to take away from the Who, Daltrey's vocal's hold up well for his age but there was no excuse professionally for being under-rehearsed, especially with a song they never played, and a beloved song at that. It's a travesty for the band to end this way. The song looks to be over for good. |

Pete “it was only research” Townshend is a complete douche and Daltrey is apparently not far behind. |

This version of Eminence Front from the Albert Hall is exceptionally good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdd6P2mbAUw Townsend's 79 years old and vocals and guitar playing are still super sharp. Unbelievable. |

What do you guys think about the classic rock bands playing post 80? In my opinion they could still pull it off in their 70's but the 80's are looking depressing. |

sounds like Roger wanted to replace him but Pete countermanded. He was definitely having some issues in that concert though, you can hear it on that song specifically. Roger and Pete have both largely maintained their voices. Which is crazy. Listen to a guy like Robert Plant, he's got half the range he used to. Even Paul McCartney is really struggling vocally in the last few months. |
