That break-up note Trey Anastasio wrote in 2004 about Phish being done, for good? Never mind.

In a terse announcement Wednesday on the band’s Web site, the Vermont-based jam band announced that it is reuniting to play three concerts next year in Virginia, and plans to announce “additional touring” early next year.

The reunion was not unexpected, as singer-guitarist Anastasio had hinted earlier this year that the possibilities were being discussed. In September, the foursome of Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, keyboardist Page McConnell and drummer Jon Fishman performed together for the first time in more than four years at the New York wedding of former road manager Brad Sands. Now it looks like the band will be in need of Sands’ services once again.

The announcement is likely to gladden the hearts of noodle-dancing fans and tour promoters, who know a cash cow when they ride one. Phish was among the most successful touring bands of all time. Despite an abbreviated touring schedule in 2004, the band hauled in $23 million on the road that year alone

Nah - not my cup of tea. No offense, but when I see a band perform live, I want the songs played the way they were written (or there-abouts) - not into the play half the song, then practice your instrument for 15 minutes, then finish the song. My attention span is WAY too short for that kind of thing.

On a side note: The term "likey" is way under-used and under-valued. Spanky likey "likey".

Sales of mind-altering drugs skyrocketed today on news of a Phish reunion...I like 'em too Darko, but I'm a bigger Widespread fan. Trey is very good, and their drummer carries the band in points...

I disagree with you wholeheartedly. As a budding musician, I recognize the extreme talent that comes with improvising around your song. It makes each show unique. I've been to shows where they played 5 minutes of "Simple" and others where they play 20 minutes of the song. Phish seems to feed off the crowd.
I don't want to go see a band live and they play the song precisely like the radio version. I could just stay at home and listen to my CD if that's the case.
Also, I don't think it's practicing their instruments.
That being said, I understand that this is based entirely on taste and everyone's is different.
I get where you're coming from. I hear that argument a lot.

More importantly - do you agree with my assessment of the word "likey"?

**I said "practicing their instruments" as my 12th out of the allotment of 100 sarcastic remarks I plan on using for the day.

While I don't like Phish, I agree w/ Darkside's position that a live band should mix things up a little bit from the recorded version. Ability to improvise is a good ability to have

Yo La Tengo was the first thing that came to my mind....they have slow, acoustic numbers on record that they play like a punk song live, and vice versa.

Like you said, if there's no difference just stay at home and listen to the record

I'd say prior to 1997 they were one of the best things going. At that point, I remember Trey mentioning, they were trying to "jam more as a band as opposed to each person taking turns individually soloing". IMO, this translated to 20 minutes of going nowhere. I saw them quite a few times between 1993 and 1999... a few stinkers in the later years, but most were absolutely amazing.

I saw the 1993 World Music Theater show and the 1994 OJ show in Milwaukee... I can't see where they can even come close to performing that well again. As much as I used to love them, I'll probably pass.

That show's
Mike's => Simple=> H20=>Simple=> Week-a-Paug is still the best Phish I've ever seen and ever heard.

"We've got OJ in the band"

I'm an oddball: I don't like Phish but I like Trey solo. I also dislike DMB but I like DM solo. Whereas I hate Mick Jagger solo & like Rolling Stones. I hate Freddie Mercury solo but like Queen. Finally, I like Tom Petty solo & with the Heartbreakers.

I'm with you on that one. Very simple: tighter songs, no useless white boy jamming.

What about TP with Traveling Wilburys or the new Mudcrutch?

You must not have ever seen Trey solo live. There is plenty of jamming, only it is done by far less talented musicians, and the jams go nowhere.

I've only ever heard the records, and those weren't enough to compel me to see him live.

Jerry said it best when discussing the Dead:

"Deadheads are kinda like people who like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but people who like licorice, *really* like licorice!"

If Phish getting back together makes some people happy, then why would anyone else really give a fuck?
