Not sure if anyone gives a crap about this band given that they're kind of like the Blackhawks of the 90s: neither cared about their fans. However, VH's first 6 albums will always hold a special place in my heart. Grew up on that stuff and make no apologies for loving it.

With that said, the link below has live stuff from circa 1978 that sounds freaking amazing. It's thru You Tube, but there's only audio. I've never heard these recordings before. Great stuff. This link has "I'm the One" and "Atomic Punk" but when you finish listening to them, more choices appear.

Enjoy.

I've always admired Alex Van Halen, but DLR gets on my nerves after awhile. The drum intro for "Hot For Teacher" is always a good listen though.

I'm one of the rare VH fans that loves both DLR and Hagar.
Alex is one of my all time favorite drummers.
And this is my all time favorite VH song.

The only announcement I'm interested in hearing from VH is that Michael Anthony is coming back. Otherwise keep it.

I grew up on DLR - VH. When I was in high school, there was this road in the middle of nowhere that we used to go hang out and drink beer, etc. etc... It was named a few classes ahead of me, but that road was called "Van Halen" for some reason....and this was long before Sammy Hagar even THOUGHT about playing with Eddie.

Of course, the local TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commision) officers, Bill & Don, soon discovered and frequently raided this spot. Somehow, that didn't deter us! :drunken:

I wasn't listening to Van Halen in '78, but the classic songs that were big with us were:

Jamie's Crying
Running With the Devil
Hot for Teacher
Panama
Jump
Beautiful Girls
Dance the Night Away

Deadly serious. Who knew?

Little Guitars belongs on ANY top 10 List...

I have a soft spot for Jamie's Cryin', as I was at Ray Meyer Basketball Camp in the summer of 1983 when I first heard that song. I thought it was "Jenny's Cryin'," but I knew I loved it.

After Jamie's Cryin, in no particular order: So This is Love?, Unchained, Panama, Little Guitars, DOA, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, I'm the One, On Fire, Dance the Night Away, Somebody Get Me a Doctor, Everybody Wants Some!!, And the Cradle Will Rock, Romeo Delight, Sinner's Swing!, The Full Bug.

There are 2 songs that were never release that I absolutely love, too: Let's Get Rockin' and Big Trouble. Great tunes.

Glad this thread was re-opened. I will always have a soft spot for the original VH, and I make no apologies.

I didnt even know there was a choice. I assumed DLR was the consensus best VH frontman. Sammy Hagar shoudl stick to making shitty tequila.

A new single, rumored to be called "Tattoo," is being released next Tuesday. The new, as-of-yet-untitled, CD drops in February.

My only hope is that it's not an embarrassment. And yes, I say that knowing full well that EVH and DLR have contributed mightily themselves to the embarrassment that is Van Halen over the past 15 years or so. Eddie with his alcoholism and weirdness. Dave with his "touring with a VH tribute band" years and weirdness. I would've given a lot of money to hang out with these guys back in the 80s. Now? The more I've read about them, the more highly I think of Sammy Hagar, who isn't without his own peccadillos.

I'm not expecting the new album to be as good as their 1978 debut. I just hope it doesn't suck. My expectations are that it probably will.

This was my favorite band in high school, and those first 6 albums got me thru some tough times. For the love of my high school days, VH, please release some decent music. I already get enough grief from my snobby music fan friends.

Did any of the big Van Halen guys on here read Sammy's autobiography? Very disturbing tales of the brothers. Of course, it's a 1 sided tale but still a good read.

I'll take "And the Cradle Will Rock" any day of the week.

No big deal.

Post subject:  Re: Any DLR-era Van Halen fans in the house?

Ok, so VH released a single, Tattoo. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Best song ever? No, but I like it better than the 2 songs they did with Dave for the 1996 Greatest Hits album.

Then, they started leaking snippets of other songs. OK, I started getting more excited, as it became pretty clear that Tattoo would be the most radio friendly song. Makes sense to release that first.

Today, however, there's a snippet for a song called China Town. I know I'm old, and I know my musical tastes aren't as eclectic as some on this board, but please, if you're an old school VH fan, listen to the 1:30 snippet of this song and tell me it's not ridiculously good.

http://www.vhnd.com/

On top of that, there's another link that has 15 second snippets of every song on the forthcoming album, A Different Kind of Truth. I have a 6-song CD that has unlreased material on it. 2 of those songs, Big Trouble and Let's Get Rockin', have been retitled (now called Big River and Outta Space), along with She's the Woman, and are on the new album. I love those songs and can't believe they're on the new album. (Unfortunately, that link no longer has the snippets.)

I can't wait until February 7th. I feel like I'm 15 again.

Welcome back, Van Halen. It's been too effing long.

They're supposed to tour in Japan in November. With these knuckleheads, you never know. But, I got 1 more album from them, so if it's over, I thank them for that and for letting me relive my teenage years again for a few months in 2012.

God, I'm a dork, but anyway...

This is worth your time if you're an old school fan. It's a half hour of music, some of which made it to albums (a lot of it on 2012's A Different Kind of Truth, albeit in different form), some of which didn't.

And here's one from the club days that I had never heard before today:

Either way, you can hear the raw talent of the original lineup in all its fucking glory. Enjoy.

I'm a big VH DLR era fan. Soundtrack of my yute.

Love all the hits but I always got a kick out of "Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now."

A humorous song about a tough guy who gets married and settles down.

Old song covered by VH featuring Alex & Eddie's dad playing the clarinet.
