Hey guys,

I saw this article about former Q101 & The Zone DJ, James Van Osdol. Apparently he is writing a book about the 90's chicago alternative rock scene. He is looking to self-publish it and wants to release by next year. He is trying to raise money to meet the publishing costs and is doing an online pledge drive. I just wanted to post this in case anyone of you may want to help him out. Im sure there will be alot of stuff in this book about local bands that many of us grew up on. Anything you can give would really help him out, and there are rewards if you pledge a certain amount. Check out his pledge page and give if you can. The book sounds pretty awesome.

Note: If he doesn't generate enough money to meet his goal, nothing will be charged to you, so you do not have to worry about losing out on money and him not publishing the book.

If this is going to be a Billy Corgan slurpfest, even if it contains how much everyone else in the Chicago scene, particularly Nina Gordon and Louise Post of Veruca Salt hated his ass, then save some trees. The only thing that will save this book is if it contains a lengthy section on how hard The Jesus Lizard ruled. Or a Liz Phair centerfold.

I doubt it will be a Billy Corgan slurp fest. Van Osdol has had a blog for a number of years now, and he has always been critical and very honest in his thoughts of musicians he has met and interviewed. Im sure he will give the focus where it is deserved. I threw the guy $10, I think the book is a great idea and I hope it gets made. No one has written anything like this on the local level. Besides Seattle, Chicago probably had one of the biggest scenes in the 90's. I hope the guy succeeds in getting the book published.

I'd be more interested to read about the late 90s/early 00s punk scene, starting with the Slapstick/Baxter/88 Fingers Louie era, and then tracing the completely incestuous (for lack of a better term) family tree that spawned even more bands down the road.

Van Osdol is kind of an interesting contradiction. He possesses an almost encyclopedic knowledge of popular music from the past few decades, but he has almost nothing interesting to say about it. He is an author in search of an idea--and a clue.

Interesting comparison.

I agree that Grobber's opinions aren't particularly interesting, but I still enjoy listening to him because of the historical perspective he brings to his shows, the weirdness of his callers, and the comically awkward nature of his personality.

Van Osdol is a much more socially polished guy and is quite intelligent and talented. But he also seems to operate from a position of complacency that prevents him from formulating interesting or original thoughts.

Good points. I was going to include a qualifier re: Grobber that I do like his show for the reasons you stated, and he seems to be spot on with the majority of his gut reactions to team moves, performance, etc. as a result of his knowledge.

Don't worry, volume two from the Aughts will contain an extensive chapter on Passive Aggressor, and you'll be part of that 75% for future generations, and you will be vindicated.

Dead to Fall are one of the more hilarious contract tragedies of any band in this city. Signed to Victory for seven LPs, don't even think they made it past three? Tony Victory is the Elgin Baylor of Chicago music.
