Im really liking it so far...very reminicent of 36 Chambers. Im even liking U God's contribution...which is rare.

Heres a more detailed rewiew from amazon

This was one of the most welcome surprises in years. There was no mention of this album being made and no clue that it was in the works until "Harbor Masters" hit the net about a month before release. The second details of a Wu-Tang-meets-classic-90's-NY-rappers album fleshed out, excitement flooded me. A few more tracks leaked and it was obvious this was going to be something to reckon with.

Now that it's out, this is just what's been missing from the Wu-Tang camp for a while. The last few years have produced some albums that appeared to bring the old Wu flavor back, namely the two Masta Killa albums, GZA's Pro Tools, and moments on U-God's Dopium and Meth's 4:21... The Day After, but this has the feel of what 8 Diagrams should have been.

The features on this album are perfect. It's amazing a concept like this hasn't already come up. Masta Ace and AZ's appearances are moments of pure joy. The only time it doesn't work is when Havoc shows up on "Evil Deeds." It's a solid track for Ghostface and RZA, but it's just not what I want out of Hav. I love when he gets on his high-energy tip. That being said, it's still not a bad song or a bad appearance from Havoc, it's just the one part where expectations are not met.

RZA worked with a soul band, The Revelations, to create the music for this whole album so it brings an obvious cohesive quality. The surprise is how being created by a band brings a certain liveliness to these tracks that begs all hip-hop go in this direction. It's faithfully indebted to the the Wu-Tang boom-bap variant that RZA mastered in the mid-90's era, but it's richer without being glossier. Sonically it has the feel of one of the first round solo projects between '94 and '97.

The second big surprise here is how inspired the Clan members themselves sound. Inspectah Deck especially is attacking these beats in a way that hasn't been heard since he fought for the spotlight on Wu Tang Iron Flag. Raekwon has awoken from the slumbered-out mush-mouth flow he's drifted into at times in recent years and Ghostface, the most consistent in the entire Clan, even he sounds more lively here if you can imagine that. U-God, the most slept-on in the Clan, is continuing the show-n-prove he started on 8 Diagrams and Dopium and is here to show what's up. Even RZA stays on cadence.

Therein lies the problem with this release, though. Those are the only members of the Clan that appear here. Method Man is sorely missed. No one in the Clan rides a beat like him or brings the energy that he does. GZA has been the Clan member that's evolved the Wu-sound most successfully across his solo career and to not have him on this album which is colored with a feeling of resurgence is a shame. And when Masta Killa gets in that Chessboxin' mindset and decides to actually rhyme, there's no one more Wu than him.

This is a perfect album in regard to what's here, but it's frustrating at the same time. It screams for the whole Clan to be involved and the fact that a little more than half the tracklist is short instrumentals or RZA philosophizing is disappointing. That certainly adds character and creates an atmosphere so I'm not even suggesting they be left off, but at 35 minutes and 37 seconds, many more full tracks could be added in. Maybe if this proves to be successful we'll get a second volume and see it more fleshed out. Regardless though, the 8 full songs that are here are all exactly what any Wu-head or 90's NYC rap fan will want.

I can't ever fathom a Wu Tang album without Meth, Gza and the Masta. And too much RZA blabber is never good but I have heard nothing but positive reviews for the album so I may give it a spin or 2.

Ya its good. Its not really like a Wu Tang Clan album. Its like an ep like 8 tracks but they re all pretty good. RZA's blabber does get old...but on this album it kinda works...he doesnt talk for longer than 30 seconds at a time.

I think when you hear the first track you ll like it. It just sounds like old stripped down classic 36 Chambers Wu

What's the latest on RZA's side project with SOAD's Odadjian and RHCP's Frusciante?

For you RPB (from Pitchfork)

Ghostface Killah Preps New Album, Tour

Teams up with R&B singers, Method Man, Redman

Ghostface Killah's frantically nonsensical wordplay and vivid crack-rap narratives get all the attention, but the Wu-Tang spitfire's soft side might be his greatest quality. For years, Ghost has proclaimed soft, woozy 70s-era R&B to be his favorite music. And more than most 90s hardcore rap veteran, Ghost sounds comfortable spitting alongside R&B singers. The Mary J. Blige collaboration "All That I Got Is You" was a highlight on Ironman, Ghost's classic solo debut. And "Back Like That", his 2006 team-up with Ne-Yo, sounded painfully out of place on the otherwise fearsome Fishscale, but it holds up beautifully on its own.

All of which is to say that it's not an altogether terrible idea for Ghost to release "an R&B-influenced rap album," which is how a press release describes his awesomely titled The Wizard of Poetry, due in September from Def Jam.

In this MTV interview, Def Jam vice president of A&R Lenny Santiago describes what that means: "Ghostface usually raps over melodic, soulful R&B tracks. This time, we came around and I had him rhyme over the same type of tracks, but we matched him with great R&B stars. John Legend is on there. Raheem DeVaughn is on there. Estelle is on there. Musiq Soulchild is on there. Lloyd is on there. We just paired him up. It's the same Ghost, the same gritty host, the same Ghost that talks to the ladies in that soulful voice along with R&B hooks."

If any of Ghost's peers tried something like this, it would look like a hopeless sellout move. For Ghost, it just makes sense.

But even if The Wizard of Poetry doesn't turn out so well, we're guaranteed a few headknock thrills when Ghost hits the road this summer. He'll be joined by the Wu-Tang Clan's other onstage MVP, Method Man, as well as frequent Meth collaborator Redman. All these guys breathe fire live, so this should be fun. Dates below:

(no Chicago date listed)

I'd be curious to know everyone's ranking of the Wu members as far as mic skills. I've always known that it's GZA number one, followed by the RZA; but after that I always struggle to rank number three. For years I was sure it was Ghostface, then I said it was the Chef; now I just don't know. I feel like a studio member on "The Running Man", I can't choose just one.

Top 3? I'd say

1. GZA
2. Ghostface
3. Inspectah Deck

Numbers 4 and 5 would probably be Raek and Method.

Mic skills?
RZA #2? If you were talking overall including production its obviously Rza but for mic skills he falls in the middle in my list.

I think GZA is actually a bit overrated as far as wu goes.

Method Man
Raekwon
Ghostface
Gza
Rza
Cappadonna
Inspectah Deck
Masta Killa
ODB
RPB
U-God

I understand it's all about personal listening tastes, but there is no way Cappadonna can be ranked ahead of Inspectah Deck. There's just no way. Deck just might be one of the most underrated MC's of all time. I do agree with your placement of the Golden Armed one, though on occasion he can steal the show; the prime example being his verse on "It's Yourz."

When I think of mic skills I'm encompassing lyrics, delivery and the sound of one's voice. I always thought someone such as B-Real had a great sounding delivery, but he lyrically he comes up short. In my book, only The GZA, RZA, Nas and Rakim possess all three.

He is not underrated. This is a classic case of someone being thought of as underrated for so long that now they re over rated.

He's good but as far as flow...Cappadonna is better

I dont know what youre talking about on "Its yourz" U god's verse is the worst as usual. Its not terrible.

But youre right about personal tastes...

Cuz I think youre crazy to put Rza ahead of Method man Rae and Ghost when it comes to the mic.

Rza is an awesome proudcer and very good rapper.

Meth's flow is so smooth, its like he doesnt even know he's rapping, he just talks like that.

I never really thought of it that way. Is it possible for an MC or anything for that matter, to be overrated and underrated at the same time? Any overrated topic when it comes to hip-hop/rap starts and stops with Snoop.

I can't be the only one who thinks his verse was top notch. I just think he really shined on that track as well as "Impossible" and "Bells of War."

I agree his flow is smooth and comes across well. Maybe in the back of my mind I'm thinking he's the most commercial of the group and would rather be somewhere smoking and clowning around with Redman so that clouds my judgment.

Cappadona will forever get props for once coming to a fork in the road and going straight. I believe he also takes out Paulie Walnuts in the video. That's something to put on your resume.

Somehow I can't see Prince being a Wu Tang fan.

You gotta act like Prince if you're gonna play the role. You have to say weird, sexually ambiguous stuff to people. C'mon Byron, you gotta DO Prince!

And here's why on a Sports message board, The GZA should be ranked number 1.

[GZA]
She dated jolly green GIANTS, that, flew on JETS
An A-list actress, who was never walked off sets
She loved stuffed animals, especially BEARS
Was a role model, like a CARDINAL to our peers
A PATRIOTIC tomboy, like Mary Ellen from The Waltons
A former lifeguard, who had the skills of a DOLPHIN
When I met her, she was in drama school and wore BENGALS
Drove a BRONCO, and she was far from star spangled
Had basic skills, and worked part time in mills
Raised buffalo's, cause she was behind them BILLS
Had a man who always roared like LION
A domestic violent cat, tackled the girl and kept her crying
Couldn't care, she was losing her hair, from depression
She was in the air, and there was some room for interceptions
I told her to stay strong, not to be ashamed
You're a "ten-i-see", you just need to TITAN your game
Her ancestors were CHIEFS, who ran with running deer
On the sail with the SEAHAWKS, who battled the BUCCANEERS
The REDSKIN garments, was suede coat liners
Held rare coins, frequently sought from gold miners
They were hard working warriors, we call over timers
Shot plenty arrows at COWBOYS and 49ERS
Her interesting background, but quite unusual
A great force grip, but out of bounds for a musical
She told me to call her, if I came to town
I started TEXAN her, soon as my plane had touchdown
Holding my luggage, in the hand that revealed the bad scars
She pulled up at arrivals, driving the JAGUAR
Her BROWN skin was soft, her legs beautifully shaven
Her house was fly, sitting on the roof, was a RAVEN
As we entered, I heard laughter
She walked into a large living room, I went after her
There was two of her, girlfriends, playing chess like they were VIKINGS
Militant as PANTHERS, they're resemblance was striking
Had on thongs, high heels, and belts that was garter
Energized like phones that just came off the CHARGER
I introduced myself to gain yardage
Cuz anything less then smooth, would of been straight up garbage
The shorter one met me, when I had a sky pager
Thought I rolled with robbers, STEELERS and panty RAIDERS
She took fruit from the orange bowl, it was in season
One of them said she loved the juice and kept squeezing
I knew that I was gonna get, wined and dined
It would of been a penalty, not to pass the scrimmage line
Now I laid back and relaxed, waiting for the kick-off
One removed the lip gloss, like she was bout to lick all
She caressed me, with fingertips soft as velvet
Dying for me to PACKER, as she stroked my helmet
And I was thinking these girls was SAINTS
But it was first and ten, and there was extra walls to paint
Before you know it, I had all three in a huddle
Buckin' like a COLT, before I released them puddles
They spread EAGLES like wide receivers
As I RAM them in the endzone, and they became true believers

If you get the chance, check out Kevin Smith talking about his experience working with Prince. There's four parts to it but it's well worth it.

Thank you for linking that. That was really really interesting.

Yeah it's way too bizarre to be made up. I mean, it's not hard to believe Prince asking for a camel at 2 in the morning in the state of Minnesota. What's even more believable is him not understanding how a request like that just can't be fulfilled.
