Doesn't anyone actually BUY good music anymore?
It amazes me that "artists" like Lady GaGA, Bieber, Katy Perry actually move millions of units,
when their shit is pretty much inescapable. To me - that's the kind of disposable shit I wouldn't spend my money on.
It's not like I haven't dl'ed torrents before, but if it's a band I truly care about, I want to give them my money.
Call me old fashioned.

i'll buy the physical release when it drops in May...and I'll go see them in concert if they pop through here.
I own the t-shirt...

I didn't know they were putting an actual cd out, so I can understand that, Doug.
But you said something in the Kanye thread that you had been meaning to "illegally" dl that torrent, or something.
As one musician to another, your attitude toward torrents is kind of surprising. Doesn't your band want to make money?

well, yeah...and no. i've found that "local" bands only make money by playing shows and selling t-shirts, etc...
there is no money to speak of for selling your music unless you can get it in a film or commercial or get lucky...whatever.
but, if you get lucky, people are gonna torrent the crap out of your music anyway.

so, i've given "my" music away for free since mp3s could be created in order to garner some sort of fanbase. i think people are more likely to listen to something (even if they don't like it) if it's free....
I don't find it any different than people passing out discs after shows.
i just think it's more cost effective to make mp3s of your music and print a flier that says "FREE MUSIC" and give it away than to make 1000 physical discs and give away/sell 500 of them.

i still buy c.d.'s but i also take advantage of the fact that it's available....truth be told, I don't do it alot, and most of the stuff I get, I don't like anyway. but, if I like it...then I'm gonna go buy a ticket and a t-shirt. and maybe see your band every time you play in chicago or milwaukee.

Top 40 is generally pop music. And pop music is exactly that- pop. It isn't meant to sustain. It's disposable. What's happening on the charts right now is the same thing that has nearly always been the case. It's full of slight compositions loaded with hooks and lyrics that are easy to sing along with. That isn't to say there aren't good songs there. Pink's "Raise Your Glass" and Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" are great songs. They're just not important in the way songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Monkey Gone To Heaven" are. The anomaly is when the Pixies and Nirvana are on the charts. What's happening now is the norm.

But I'm sure there are kids in basements right now cranking up guitars and lashing back against Ke$ha and Bieber the same way I wanted to do something more important than "Seasons In the Sun" or "How Do You Do?" But I can't say that my playing wasn't informed by listening to those K-Tel records. It most definitely was. And when a band like the Replacements covered "Heartbeat" by the DeFranco Family it may have been campy and it may have been ironic on the surface, but I know Paul Westerberg liked that song and most of the people listening liked it too.

Doug burned me a few albums from Radiohead and dropped it to me at the
Brat Stop. I'll be purchasing every album upcoming. I felt bad that he burned
them for me but in the long run I'll be buying albums from these guys for years
to come.
