Im not Doug Darko or Frank and you dont care for me but All different reasons Axl because he was the quintessential rock star David Lee Roth because he was a fucking supernova Bono because he makes and performs arena rock better than anyone Jagger because he's Jagger I dont think there's a formula Although gay lead singers are usually good. Bowie, Mercury, Jagger |

Grohl is a better "front man" than the front man from the bigger band he used to be in. Grohl is probably the ultimate "rock star" going right now. He lives the lifestyle, doesn't hide it, and has the 'street cred' to back it up. Plays multiple instruments (well). Not to mention he is the lead vocalist of a HUGE band right now. Also has dated some very famous women. Compare that resume to that of some the guys listed in this thread..........no contest. Lou Gramm, Tyler, Jagger, Halford, Ocasek, Stanley,.... I stand by original statement. |

Another factor for any singer to be great is, like an actor, for them to be believable. If the song is sad, they have to make you believe they are truly heartbroken. If you don't believe what they are singing, even if the vocal is okay, you're not going to connect with the singer as much. Making a connection with the frontman is very important. |

Your eyerolls are WRONG. David Groh screeches like somebody is grinding his sack. He whips his head around with that long greasy hair looking like he is having a seisure. He wished he had the kind of recording career of a Lou Gramm or Paul Stanley. |

SHARK MOMENT:David Groh was the actor who played Rhoda's husband. Rhoda was from the Mary Tyler Moore show in the early seventies on CBS. |

I don't really see how the answer could be anything but Jagger. He kind of invented the concept of a "frontman". Other guys have commanded the stage- guys like Roth, Daltrey, etc., but they all borrowed from Jagger. there are guys like Jarvis Cocker and Rick Sims with giant stage presence. You could even throw someone like Courtney Love in there. Then there's this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrDIOVXx-y8 |

Steinbrenner: Well, he'd been logging some pretty heavy hours, first one in in the morning, last one to leave at night. That kid was a human dynamo. Estelle: Are you sure you're talking about George? Steinbrenner: You are Mr. and Mrs. Costanza? Frank (yelling): What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?!? He had 30 home runs, over 100 RBIs last year, he's got a rocket for an arm, you don't know what the hell you're doin'!! Steinbrenner: Well, Buener was a good prospect, no question about it. But my baseball people love Ken Phelps' bat. They kept saying 'Ken Phelps , Ken Phelps'. |

To me, his guitar work and songwriting are superior to his singing ability, but it's irrelevant because his showmanship on said guitar makes him a great frontman. |

frontman ( ) n. A man who serves as a nominal leader but who lacks real authority. Music. by this definition, it would be David Lee Roth. however, if by the greatest we consider voice, attitude, showmanship, longevity, song quality, etc... it's kinda hard to not put Freddie Mercury in that class. I guess Jagger, but I don't really care for his voice. Axl is up there. I don't consider guitar player in this at all because they are limited in ways by having to play. |

If you had to define Rock and Roll frontman in three words it's David Lee Roth. Dude was just three shades of crazy. Spandex, hair, screamy, party, cokegirlfriends, and AHhhhhh gaaaaht maaaah PEEEENCILLLL! But might I submit, humbly, Jerry Garcia. He can sing. He can write, he can play, and he was funky, drunky, druggy, and rolled in all the dough. All of it. Really, not much seperating him from the others but volume. And spandex |

I don't know about the greatest, that is something that is so subjective. But I will say my 2 favorite would be Axl Rose and Steven Tyler. |

I can't speak on Jagger cause I've never seen him live, but seeing Roth, Axl, and Tyler have all those people in the palm of their hands was a thing. |

Yeah, not so much anymore, but if you were at the show at the Aragon 20 years ago with RHCP and the Pumpkins, you'd remember that he used to be a force. One of the greatest 3 band bills EVER!!!!!!!!! |

I've been in this discussion before, with basically the same principle candidates, and every time it usually ends up at Freddie Mercury, but I think timing has a lot to do with it. Queen's greatest period was at the height of bombast and glam in rock, and they were great practitioners of that model. Iggy Pop gets thrown off the ballot because he is as known, perhaps more so, as a solo artist as one of The Stooges. David Byrne's a great front man, too, if you think about it. John Lydon should be considered for The Sex Pistols and P.I.L. But, at the end of the day, it all comes back to one man: |
