I'm looking to pick up a tube amp, a bass guitar and possibly an acoustic. Any suggestions on where to look? |

just the head or a combo amp? as far as the guitars go, i would suggest having someone go with you who knows what they are doing to make sure they are playable. local music shops, music go round, guitar center, sam ash. |

Fuck combos man. Doug likes em. I'm not a big fan. If the head goes you gotta buy basically new speakers to replace the system whereas if you have a head/cabinet and you blow out a head you can just get the head... course valves would be replaceable in either if you had a valve combo... but fuck that. |

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you play them and like how they sound/feel. If you aren't sure of what you are doing (which is ok, btw) take somebody with you who does. There is also no harm in going to a Sam Ash or Guitar Center to try a couple of things out to see what you like and don't like. |

That's cool. If its used, play it first. If you don't like how it sounds, don't buy it. |

I can't recall in my 25 years of playing guitar ever coming across someone who had a combo amp blow up...heads on the other hand, always seem to have issues if you are not replacing tubes (~$45 each) and having the amp biased every two-three years. I've had multitudes of rack gear with a cabinet, two heads with different cabinets, and three combo amps. Combo amps are much easier to transport. So, unless you have a hot hatch, SUV, or pickup truck, and plan on starting a band...I wouldn't bother with a head-cabinet combination. $600 for a Peavey Classic 30... You can get more amp for less money if you shop around. Look at Vox, Fender, and Line 6. |

well...i would get one of these. tons of onboard effects, so you won't need to spend any money on pedals. and you can dial in different amp models. which is a huge bonus for getting different sounds. Vox VT40+ |
