Are there any acts out there today that do the traditional heavy metal sound of the 1970s and 80s? You know Sabbath, Judas Priest, Dio, that kind of thing. I guess Metallica kind of killed the idea that metal could sound good IMO. |

I think Dream Theater Opeth lean towards progressive metal. Check out Brendon Small's Galaktikon. |

I have all their albums up until 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence so I'm not too sure about what they are now. Saw them live once with Satriani, good show. |

Pick up The Crusade by Trivium. It's the album Metallica should've made after AJFA. Matt Heafy out-Hetfields Hetfield. |

I'm not sure what the hell this is or how I ever stumbled upon it. The groups name is Baroness. Their older stuff had a non-rainbow dio-ish vibe to it but their voices are shit. This is newer and sounds more like they wanted to be a darker harder version of Queens of the Stone age. I fear they might have went all in on a hipster metal movement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZKPpeuHvJk This video looks like Dio made it in 1983. Its not bad until they start singing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1FaRemp ... re=related |

Baroness' blue and red albums are really good, but I would avoid the green and yellow albums. |

For those who like Dream Theater, here are some similar bands with interesting stuff: Circus Maximus (try Glory of the Empire) Symphony X (try Accolade II) Seventh Wonder (try The Great Escape) By the way, anyone heard the new Rush album? I haven't gotten around to it yet so I'm curious whether it's just more of the same from their modern sound. It's funny, but Geddy's voice was always a point of ridicule....but now that he's singing an octave lower, I long for the banshee-wail voice. |
