Nothing I've ever read that you've written belies an anti-ska sentiment, I guess. To me, there are three distinct eras/movements in ska: Proto-reggae, like Toots and the Maytals or Desmond Dekker, the Two Tone label stuff from England in the late 70's/early 80's (Specials, English Beat, etc.) and that Mighty Mighty Bosstones ska/rock era in the '90's. I know a lot of people who don't care for one or another, but nobody who dislikes all three. |

Toots is alright, but I can't stand the Bosstones. I'm not familiar with the English bands that you listed. |

Jazz is the best and I would be happy to assist you. Country pretty much sucks. Metal sucks. How do you not understand/appreciate pop? It's just there. Electronic can be terrific or terrible across all the mentioned subgenres. Even dubstep has its moments. I just got a pretty good dubstep album the other day! ...what do you like, then? |

Cock Rock.....Nickelback, Seether.....that kind of shit. It sounds like what should be the house music at a truck stop strip club in Charleston, West Virginia. Usher/Chris Brown and all that top 40 auto tune hip hop mess. Burrito Country/Adult contemporary country.....Rascal Flatts and Lonestar own this category. |

ROB No, that's okay. Really. DICK 'Cause you like their second one, you said, Pop, Girls. etc. The one with Cheryl Ladd on the cover. You didn't see the cover though. ROB Yeah, I haven't really absorbed that one. |

I know a lot of people who don't care for one or another, but nobody who dislikes all three. That's an excellent description of basic ska history. The third wave of ska was referred to as skacore and many of the bands had a lot of punk influences including Less Than Jake, Rancid, Operation Ivy, the Suicide Machines and Reel Big Fish. The third wave ska scene was largely ignored by the mainstream with the exception of a few artists such as The Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris, No Doubt and Sublime. Swing bands were also part of this big band resurgence. |

Mini Ditka wrote: Swing bands were also part of this big band resurgence. I have yet to see a swing band that I wouldn't consider purely a nostalgia act. I don't really need Jimmy Sutton when I can put on a Treniers record. One time I was at Martyr's for the Big "C" Jamboree because a couple of my friends were playing. The headliner that week was a rockabilly three-piece from England. I closed the bar with those guys. After we had thrown back a whole lot of Maker's Mark, these Brits started talking about the Chicago rockabilly "scene". They were making fun of the way these guys dressed and the old cars they drove. One of the guys told me that he dresses this way on stage but when he goes to work on Monday he likes to look like he's actually in this decade. Nothing against Ken Mottet, but he's a weird dude. It's fucking 2012, man! Anyway, I think if you're going to revive an old form, you should attempt to move it forward. The third wave ska bands did that. I can't say the same for any modern swing band I've ever heard. |

Believe it or not, I actually have a cassette tape of Dance Craze that I made in the 1980's. In the 1980's, I dressed very fashionably and I was quite a favorite with the ladies. I am not saying that I was like a Hollywood playboy, but there definitely was action aplenty. It did not hurt that I was ruggedly handsome and an athletic ice hockey player. Alas, I digress. Many years later, I bought a Dance Craze compact disc later on, and was disgusted to learn that the Madness songs had been omitted. "Razor Blade Alley," "One Step Beyond" and "Night Boat to Cairo" were absolute gems. I agree with you about Bad Manners. "Lip Up Fatty" and "Inner London Violence" are two stellar tunes. |
