Okay. Fair enough. That might be like comparing Gordie Howe and Gretzky. But this would be my argument. I love the Runaways and I know they were important and there just weren't girl bands in their time, but I have to think about it like this, if dudes played just like they did you might not even know who they were. When I say Sleater-Kinney was great, I don't have to qualify it by saying "for chicks." Lita Ford was pretty awesome though. Where girl bands usually fall down is in the drumming. A set of balls swinging between one's legs is a general prerequisite for hitting the skins. Yeah, I can't see the Velvets without Mo Tucker or the White Stripes without Meg, but those are special cases. Their playing was very rudimentary and its inferiority to everything going on around it was part of the sound. Janet Weiss can play like fucking Bonham. |

Someday, hopefully not too far in the future, Sleater-Kinney will reunite and JORR and I will be there. He'll probably have his shirt off, sitting on my shoulders, waving his lighter back and forth during "Don't Talk Like". |

Best: Are Wings eligible based on Linda McCartney's affiliation with the band? If not, probably The Mamas & the Papas. I'm heading down to Atlanta for the Music Midtown festival tomorrow, and Garbage is scheduled to play. Not too familiar with them apart from what you would hear on Q101 in the late '90s, but from what I remember, Shirley Manson looked like she would be a lot of fun. Worst: Whoever it is that does the song that Les Grobstein uses as the intro to "...And For That You Suck", or Nickelback. |

The Pretenders. I just love Time the Avenger. Chrissie Hynde is the only chick in the band but whatever. |

The Hellcats from Memphis deserve some mention here. Those chicks were wild. I have to believe Misty White was at least the inspiration for the Young Fresh Fellows' "Hillbilly Drummer Girl." I think Diane Green lives in Chicago now. Lori Greene is great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-TjPoNOMpc |
