(those that don't really, really know their axe need not respond, sorry) So, as happens so often whilst surfing the web, you never really know where you're going to find yourself .... the other day, I found myself drawn to this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q-30HAKXjs A fella named Ben Lacy does, imho, a fucking killer rendition of one of my favorite Steely Dan charts, 'FM' (a song built on one of the best straight-ahead grooves - right there with "So What" by Miles, "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" by the Stones, and "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed, just to name my three other faves). Anyway, I cannot with any degree of honesty say I know much about guitars .... not opinions on who's cool, technical masters vs smoke-and-mirrors guys, and so forth. Thus, to the properly intelligent axe men on the bored, what's your take on Ben Lacy? What's your take on this performance? Not knowing the mechanics anywhere nearly as intimately as I would sitting behind 88 keys, am I missing something or is his ability to lead the listener to 'hear' what he isn't playing (as much as enjoying what he is able to play/perform)? To me, I can't believe his technique is anything short of masterful, his sense of what people need to hear so that he (or the listener) can ghost what's not technically there, and so forth. Anyway, am I a guitar tard being amazed by someone who's just okay, or is that cat one bad mother fucker in the same way I see it? (hey, at least it isn't some ass-dicking political question) |
