Post subject:  Overrated

Spawned by talk of Bernstein hating Floyd in the hip hop topic, let's see who's over rated., which is not to be confused with popular bands that I may hate, i.e. Dave Matthews Band, AC/DC, etc. I'm talking about bands that have been undeservedly canonized.

Here are a few in my incredibly biased opinion:

Pink Floyd
Radiohead

-Both are boring British crap for the most part. The audio equivalent of a quaalude

The Refused
-So you're telling me the alleged seminal punk album of the last decade is a Helmet record?

The Eagles
-If this is the supposed best of American rock and roll, then our country sucks at music.

KISS
-They just flat out suck

***Late Addition***
Weezer
-A few tolerable, forgettable pop tunes, all 3 or 4 of them from the first two albums, but no explicable reason for them to be revered as musical geniuses. Plus, Rivers Cuomo is a complete turd.

I've never understood the constant love and praise for Beck. Then when I comment on how his music sucks and sounds bad the fans always say "but you have to see him live". If he can't make a studio recording sound good how is he good live?

Uh... where should I start?

Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi (who lived up to its acronym completely). I'm going to stop here but the list is long, very long.

Oh my lord I am with you on Aerosmith, but Bon Jovi has never been a critical success, they've always just been disregarded as rock and roll for women to me.

I can't focus on this issue right now, as I am still devastated by the news that Andy Taylor has left Duran Duran. That is, I was devastated after I got over the initial shock of learning that Duran Duran was still in existence.

Not only are they in existance, they are the band opening the brand new Sears Center in Hoffman Estates tonight.

What are the odds Mac & Drinky are there?

Guns and Roses. Good lord these ass hats SUCKED! Slash is a really good guitarist....if compared to Micky Mars or C.C. DeVille. I read someone on this board who called them his generations Led Zeppelin. That comment almost brought me down to my cha-na-na-na knees knees....

Zoorpoa & Pop are indefensible, but...
Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree & Achtung Baby are all very good, and in case of UF great, albums.

My vote for Over rated goes to PHISH - whose appeal completely missed me even when I was buzzed.

I agree with Phish being over rated Rob, it's all useless white boy noodling.

BUT

A friend of mine asked me to download Trey Anastasio's latest CD for him. I'd listened to his other solo works to review them when they came into the station at school, and found them incredibly boring, but his latest seemed to incorporate everything I love about Wilco, and shed itself of everything I hate about Phish. It's a suprisingly enjoyable listen, even though I felt dirty about it.

I could not agree more on Rolling Stones, KISS and U2 - sorry, but Joshua and Achtung does not a 20 year career make.

stone, thought the same damn thing - I actually thought it was a joke when I saw that story, or that Yahoo news had dug something out of the archives.

I don't know why so many people seem to hate Pink Floyd; I realize it isn't banging on the drums and hard rock, but its not like you don't know that going in. But the creativity and the lyrics are great.

Weezer is similar - I just like mellowing out to them, and the songwriting is pretty damn good.

Really?!?!
I've totally ignored anything Phish related.
Which Wilco period would you compare it to?
Being There, or YHF/AGIB?

Anybody seeing Tweedy and the mates in November?

1. Led Zeppelin---Awful cock rock, many bands did what they did before them and those bands did it better then Led. They stole songs and never gave any credit and Plant may be the worst singer of all time.

2. Eagles- 4th rate Flying Burrito Brothers

3. The Beatles- Their music (their influence could never be overrated)

Some current ones...MIA, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens

Good call Spinnin, I can't believe I forgot about this. I think their entire career managed to cover like four chords, and the lyrics could be substituted in any one of their other songs.

what???.....

radiohead? are you fucking nuts, Stink? easily two of the top 5 concerts i've ever been to. o.k. computer, kid a, amnesiac, hail to the thief...they can do no wrong by me....
i can understand if you don't like the whiny vocal approach by thom yorke, but i feel the same way about bubble gum "punk" band crap....

Beck? granted he's had some stinker albums, but Odelay, Mutations, and Guero were fantastic discs, Hawkeye.

I can't believe you guys don't like refused....it's in no way a helmet album. helmet is slow and sludgy compared to refused's "the shape of punk to come" and "songs to fan the flames of discontent." great mixing, great guitar sounds.....very intense.

this discussion really is opinionated drivel anyway. there's no convincing me that the above bands are "overated." it's just not your cup of tea. I can understand that and respect it......but, you guys are just wrong on the above.

Aerosmith- for sure, dude looks like a lady indeed
U2- yes
Kiss- you had to be there, overated yes
ACDC- yes
Def Leppard- first album good but "poor some sugar on me"?

Pink Floyd is not overated. I can understand if you base your opinion on what you might hear on the radio, but they have alot of great stuff that most have not heard before. Meddle is an outstanding album from start to finish, same with Animals. You never hear any cuts from either of these on the radio. Oh ya, Zeppelin is not overated. My tastes show my age I guess.

Couldn't disagree more and won't even bother to go into it on U2. I'm sorry to tell you guys but they're the best rock band of the past 25+ years. (can't wait for the hate mail there)

KISS? I thought the topic was overrated. Who is rating them?

Radiohead - Disagree as well.

As talented as Dave Matthews Band is, I feel like they are strongly overrated.

The Partridge Family and The Monkeys were the most over-rated bands.

Johnny Bravo was very under-rated in those days.

MM, it's cool...

1. I'm not trying to be the smartest in the room, I only try that when I'm drunk (in person, I rarely post intoxicated) and I also know that many on this board are much smarter then I.

2. LZ were put together like a boy band to emulate the Who, Page stole from all blues guitarist (so did everyone), but Page failed to ever give credit. They also stole "Dazed and Confused" and din't give songwriting credits and Page stole the bow on the guitar shtick and never gave credit. Blue Cheer were much better. I understand the love for Zeppelin, they were huge, and I also have a general bias against them because they tend to remind me of many bad memories from High School for one reason or another. Jim O'Rourke once said something like, "i like Led Zeppelins music, but I hate their songs". I feel similar, great rythm section and Page despite his downfalls (IMO) was a very good guitarist, I just think Plant is awful and that the themes in the music are that of a love struck 13 year old.

3. I'm not here for attention. I feel the songwriting was cheesy and that Don henly really set that band back. I think it's like country-rock that you can find on Lite FM. No great detail to it, I just think they suck and many bands that have similar sounds have done it better, mostly the Byrds and FBB.

4. Any overrated list is gonna be looked at from one extreme, no ones gonna name check the Pretty Things as being overrated because mostly only hardcore music fans know about "SF Sorrow". And the newer stuff may not be huge on mainstream radio but most music nerds know the more recent acts I think are overrated.

I respect everyones musical taste, I dont believe in guilty pleasures because I've never been ashamed to like something. Plus, music touches people (This is your day to reciprocate), in ways that nothing else can, at least to me.

Radiohead is definitely overrated. Thom Yorke needs to shut the fuck up. Sounds like a whiny 14 year old.

Aerosmith is also incredibly overrated. They get a lot of love for being the 2nd worst American rock band ever.

Guns'N'Roses is the number 1 worst American rock band ever.

Weezer is not overrated, in my mind, because The Blue Album and Pinkerton are both very good albums. The problem with Weezer is that they decided to become terrible after those two.

As far as Led Zeppelin goes...I think they are incredibly overrated, but not because their music is bad. I actually do like a fair amount of Led Zeppelin songs. Jimmy Paige was a great song writer (couldn't solo his way out of a paper bag, though) and Jones/Bonham were a tight rhythm section. Aside from Robert Plant being incredibly annoying, my problem with Zep is that there were so many, better, more deserving bands from that era who did not receive nearly as much fame or critical acclaim. Atomic Rooster & King Crimson come to mind. I just think they get far too much credit. They did not invent hard rock or heavy metal. If you are one of those brainstems who thinks they were a metal band, I have 4 words for you:

Fool in the Rain.

Okay, let's go over this.

U2 is not overrated. Their recent body of work is pretty vanilla to bad; this I can't deny. But look at the great albums they made over 15 years! Boy is a post-punk masterpiece, capturing an youthful urgency and intensity that we'd never imagine them having if we only knew "Beautiful Day." War is one of the best albums of the 1980s, juxtaposing furiously bellicose Celtic folk-inspired rock with lyrics yearning for and demanding peace and faith, and it's powerful from wire to wire. The Unforgettable Fire showcases the great synergy between the band and Brian Eno, as does The Joshua Tree, which boasts one of the most beautiful songs of the decade in "With Or Without You" and one of the greatest openers ever in "Where The Streets Have No Name." Even Rattle and Hum, though notoriously bloated, has its moments, and Achtung Baby is great, as you guys acknowledged. Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1 is a nice experimental album.

Led Zeppelin is one of the all-time great bands. Every musician worth a damn has stolen from the bluesmen. While I don't have much of an opinion on the ancillary elements of the band's career, their music undeniably stands up as the best of its time, at least through PG. Zep didn't invent hard rock or heavy metal, but they did a lot to advance it, in my opinion.

Thom Yorke does need to shut the fuck up, but I love Radiohead regardless. They just make great music. You don't even like "Idioteque," Anthony? That's one of their best.

Weezer is pretty overrated to me. Nobody has ever coasted more on less. They made one adequate power-pop album and one proto-emo thing and Rivers Cuomo pretty much has a free pass to get away with "What's the deal with my brain/why am I so obviously insane?" How's the moon in June, Harvard boy? I hope they're finished. What an uncreative and uncompelling band.

Sufjan Stevens is one indie darling I can't embrace. His vibraphone/children's choir conceit is so tiresome, his cutesy long song titles are tiresome, everything about him is just tiresome.

Strokes/Hives/Vines/White Stripes: overrated. God, that "they've saved rock and roll!" thing in 2002 was brutal. Rock and roll doesn't need saving. It's gonna be fine.
