Is anyone going to either show? I can't make it tonight, but their are still tickets last I saw for tomorrow's show. I'd love to go, but all of my friends are a bunch of pantywaists that hate spending money on shows.

If I was still in Chicago I would, mark Lanegan is opening and he is worth the price of admission x2

He actually sings lead on another tune with them on their latest EP, A Stitch In Time, on a cover of Massive Attack's "Live With Me". Solid EP from them all around, too.

Agreed. "I'm Ready", "Bonnie Brae", and "Forty Dollars" rock the party.

You all would also be well served to check out Bob Pollard at the Abbey Pub next Friday. He brings the rock bigtime.

I'm still on the fence about it, might go, but I'm gonna be right back there tomorrow night for this Bollweevils / Tossers show that my wife is dragging me too.

Is that the Naked Raygun reunion show?

Naked Raygun is November 5th at the Congress.

I'd really like to go to the Naked Raygun show but I can't stand the Congress. I wonder why they didn't play that Touch & Go block party thing few months back

I didn't know Blue Meanies are playing, at least I know some of their stuff. It's more my wife's cup of tea

So of course I didn't end up going to the Twilight Singers, looking forward to the report...

First of all, let me just say I had probably about the worst timing ever with getting there via CTA. Waited 25 minutes for a train at the Damen stop, then another 15 for a transfer at Belmont, and then another 15 for the 72 bus at North & Clybourn before it started to get too late, and my friend had already been waiting at least 25 minutes, so I jogged from North and Clybourn to the Double Door (and didn't see one westbound bus pass me, so jogging was a good decision), because I didn't have any cash on me for a cab.

Needless to say, I needed a beer or 17 when I got there. I missed the first opener, Stars of Track and Field, but caught the second, Jeff Klein, who is also the Singers' keyboardist. Very mellow acoustic stuff somewhat reminiscient of Elliott Smith, but did some cool effects with recording and immidiately looping himself, giving a much fuller sound than you'd think a one-man show could produce.

Dulli and the rest took the stage at 11:00 sharp, and opened with "Toward The Waves" right into a cut off the new EP, "Sublime". "Esta Noche" and "Bonnie Brae" followed. About 5 songs in, Lanegan hopped on stage for the cover of Massive Attack's "Live With Me" which he performs on the new EP. They went right into a traditional folk song most would recognize by Nirvana as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?". After that the setlist begins to blur, as I did my taste buds, as I switched from Honkers to Bud Diesel cans. I know they did a bitchin trifecta of "Teenage Wristband", "I'm Ready", and "Papillion". Another highlight was an inspired performance of "Candy Cane Crawl". Lanegan came back out for the encore, and they capped the night with "Underneath The Waves" at around 1AM.

Dulli was very enaging the entire time, and from the way he was talking (I know you're happy for me), the crowd for the Thursday night show was more into it than the Wednesday night show. There's a very real chance that could have been pandering to the audience. At one point he remarked on how he planned on getting drunk tonight, and did a kind of stretch manuver where he looked like he sniffed his own armpit and remarked "Damn, I smell good. I smell like cookies". A woman in the audience yelled "What kind?" and the response was a very prompt "Your favorite kind".

All in all, it was an excellent concert experience.

Thanks for the report. Sounds great. Never seen the Twilight Singers but the few times I saw Afghan Whigs Dulli was pretty engaging too, he definetly has a stage presence. Sometimes his schtick goes over the top though, but sounds like he was on point last night.

Conversely, Lanegan barely moved, and sung with his eyes closed, gripping the mic stand fiercely. It was actually quite effective contrasting against Dulli's antics.

So Lanegan didn't open?

Saw Lanegan with QOTSA twice, once at the Metro and once at Lolla a couple yaers back. He always does that, just comes out at the end of a song, looking like they dragged his ass out of a coffin, he just grabs the mic real tight, closes his eyes and lets this incredible demon come out of his body, very intense, and the shit he sings about matches his demeanor very well, how did his voice sound, he's my favirote vocalist ever and maybe even my fav artist of all time.

He sounded fantastic, his voice perfectly fit the two covers I mentioned. The whole band sounded awesome.
