I know done before but I feel the need to share my thoughts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQsM6u0a038 For me it is hard to say but Freddie Mercury just barely nudges out Roger Daultry. I didn't get into Queen until right before he died due to Highlander, after buying "A Kind Of Magic" I was hooked. I got every cassette I could as fast as I could. I now have all the Cd even the greatest hits just so I have some of the live versions. I downloaded a crap load of the bootleg stuff. I thought he was good but not the best until one day I was sitting in my apt feeling like shit and I had Pandora on and " Too Much Love Will Kill You" came on. It was like a sledgehammer hit me. I sat and listened too it. Went on the internet and researched the song and was stunnded. It was one of the last songs he recorded before he died. I kept listening too it,I listened to the various versions done by others singing besides Freddie. I downloaded the words and went wow he is here saying that his life was just looking for love and acceptance and it killed him. That is when I decided he was the best ever. Do not believe me watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQsM6u0a038 |

Freddie just did everything, his range was incredible. He was just such a joy to listen too. About the only music I can listen to more than Queen is Hendrix and Bo Mould/Husker Du/Sugar. Just watch the link of them at Live Aid. They stole the freaking thing. |

Freddie always kind of wins this by default because it's difficult to pick him off in any category. Showmanship, voice ,energy, musicianship he's always Top 5. DLR might pick him off in some categories, but not all. A lot of people mention Jim Morrison, but the Doors concerts I've seen are duuulll. Iggy should be in the conversation, as should Perry Farrell and David Byrne. |

Somewhat off topic but, I was watching this Queen Live from Montreal concert DVD recently, and I was trying to remember if, when I was a kid, if there was ever a time when me or my friends didn't know that Freddy Mercury was gay, because the last third or so of the concert is basically this: I don't think that we did and we were just cool with it, unfortunately. That just wasn't the way in my neighborhood. More likely we didn't know. But-really? seriously? We didn't have an inkling? |

Hard to argue with Freddie Mercury. He had it all. DLR and Axl have to be in the team photo tho. |

If the Rolling Stones retired, say, 25 years ago, would you guys consider Mick? |

Colonel Angus wrote: If the Rolling Stones retired, say, 25 years ago, would you guys consider nut? What difference does that make? Isn't he just the obvious answer? He kind of invented the entire concept of the "frontman". You make more money in a minute than most men make in their lives off the juke box alone And when you're tired of abusin' you get a blood transfusion And you're back up and groovin' for another show |

1. Freddie Mercury. 2. Bruce, if one considers the E Street Band 3. Robert Plant Honourable mentions - Joe Strummer, Bono. |

Jagger Tyler Daltrey Peter Wolf - J. Geils Band Plant Ian Anderson - Jethro Tull Mercury was incredibly overrated - too theatrical and insincere. Springsteen is not a frontman, he isn't part of a band, like Seger outgrew the Silver Bullet Band and Petty outgrew the Heartbreakers. |

Not necessarily my favorites, but in terms of best ever; Freddy Mercury Elvis Mick Jagger Iggy Pop Plant and Daltrey belong at least in the team photo not so much for their voices/songwriting ability, but their personas. Without Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey, there would not have been an Axl Rose, or Bono in the late 80's/early 90's. |

Waters and syd were the frontmen, and waters was basically the frontman and gilmour was a co-lead vocalist. You could call waters a frontman. |

Elvis, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Johnny Cash are better musically than most of who have been mentioned. It's rather vague on what the greatest frontman in this thread is supposed to do or be. Are we saying best singer on album, best live singer, best songwriter, best stage presence, longevity, etc.? |
