Great thread idea, Stink. I love knowing what other people's heads sound like.

I'm afraid this song has become more than a bit of a cliche, but it often occupies space in my brain, as it does now--"New Slang" by the Shins. Although I've heard this songs thousands of times, it always commands my full attention. When it's on, I have to stop what I'm doing and sing along.

Most people love it for its melody but think the lyrics are either nonsense or some kind of weird love song. But that just means most people don't get the lyrics.

The song is about exactly what its title says it's about--the need for "a new slang", a new language, a new way of looking at things because reality does not correspond to prevailing interpretations of the world: "New slang, when you notice the stripes/the dirt in your fries/hope it's right when you die, old and bony". When you see what's hidden (sometimes in plain sight), what doesn't fit in, the familiar suddenly becomes alien to you, you recognize the inherent instability of your environment, and this knowledge can become a curse. The Shins here enter the realm of Freud's uncanny or Lacan's anamorphotic spot-- the sudden revelation that social or metaphysical coherence is a fiction underwritten by the descriptive power of language itself. Faced with this discomforting reality, one may be doomed to "look in on the good life" he "might never find". But, if one does indeed find a "new slang" to make his alienated perspective matter, to illustrate the centrality of what has previously been marginalized, he will triumphantly "dance like the king of the eyesores".

a couple of my favorites:

I spread disease like a dog
Discharge my payload a mile high
Rotten egg air of death wrestles your nostrils
----------
Never knowing if I'd wake up in a
Whirlpool got redundant
My brain was just some driftwood
In a cesspool I became dead
From a rock star to a desk fool
Was my destiny someone said
Love's a tide pool
Taste the waters
Life's abundant

Live with Les on vox for the verse, or album with Waits?

I still can't believe Wyld Stallynz beat out Primus in the San Dimas Battle of the Bands.
