The songs that just run from the gut. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way. Two lovers screaming that at each other every night on stage was simply awesome. Mick and Christie separating also at the same time. Fantastic tension. Tupac - Hit em Up. There was no false tough guy in that song. It was pure hate. No hugging it out. Tori Amos - Me and My Gun. Damn. |

Good topic. I'm a sucker for a song about past love/being dumped so: Dire Straits: Romeo and Juliet "You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah. Now you just say, "Oh Romeo, yeah. You know, I used to have a scene with him."" kills me. every time. Airborne Toxic Event: Sometime Around Midnight, The whole song slowly picks up to the apex;"you just have to see her, you know that she'll break you in two." Kicks me in the balls. Oh and Radar Love. Makes me happily think of Homer Simpson. |

Although I think Hollow fits the bill more. 5 minutes sounds visceral, but Hollow was personal to Phil. |

Probably the most powerful 5 musical minutes I've ever experienced. |

Afghan Whigs - My Curse. A song Greg Dulli wouldn't even sing because it meant so much to him. YouTube it. Seriously might not be your thing but it is heart on the sleeve thing. |

You beat me to it. "And there's blood on my teeth when I bite my tongue to speak" might be my favorite Whigs lyric. I'd like to add "Gemini (Birthday Song)" by Why?. Love this song. I want a verb and you give me a noun. Lyrics Audio |

I would not have thought to compare Why? to They Might Be Giants in a million years. Might want to explore the rest of their catalogue. |

I'd go with "Get Down make Love" by NIN. Add some odder ones Blue Skies, Allman Brothers Band Add it Up, Violent Femmes 25 or 6 to 4, Chicago Ted, Just Admit it, Jane's Addiction Running up That Hill, Kate Bush |

I have no idea what visceral means when it comes to music, but you're right, this song is a punch in the gut if a person is in the right mood. We've all felt like this about somebody before...and they nailed it. |

I, too, do not know what the hell visceral means in this context, so I'm just going to throw out "Purple Rain" and "Heroes." |

The Mountain Goats - "No Children" And I'd hope when you think of me years down the line, you can't find one good thing to say And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out, you'd stay the hell out of my way I am drowning, there is no sign of land You are coming down with me, hand in unlovable hand And I hope you die, I hope we both die |

Are we just saying songs that "tug at your heart strings", especially if it's a reminder of places in our lives? Cause that's gonna be a long list. |

In can mean anything, if you read the first post though, what was listed were songs that were really strong and raw from the artists stand point. Go your own way,two lovers screaming at each other on stage every night. Hit em Up. Angry Tupac not holding back and it leading to his death shortly after. Tori Amos singing about when she was raped for 10 hours. |

I took "visceral" to mean sung with the type of emotion where the listener has no choice but to empathize. It's difficult enough to perform a love song and then you've got an entire generation who cloaked themselves in hard-edged sarcasm and irony, and real love songs get hard to find. So you take a guy who is really a Baby Boomer at heart like Paul Westerberg, but he's playing for Gen-Xers and he's almost embarrassed to perform something like "Within Your Reach". The Cure have several. Robert Smith is good at making the listener feel his desperation. And you don't have to be a lesbian to feel the emotion of "One More Hour". There are a lot of these pop artists on the radio today singing what may ostensibly be called love songs, but I rarely hear them putting across real emotion. Instead they have falsettos and autotune. They aren't expressing the desire and yearning of something like "Letter To Memphis". Tryin' to get to you. You want to know what "visceral" means? How about when Tweedy sings the last line in "She's a Jar". |
