Led Zeppelin, the Stones and Hendrix were all very talented, but I don't think people will be listening to them as much ten or twenty years from now. Except for a handful of tunes, what these groups produced was just a lot of noise, Hendrix especially. I'm partial to Jimmy Page, whom I believe to be a genius and the greatest guitar virtuoso of them all, but even with him, does anyone whistle "Whole Lotta Love" or "Kashmir"? Of course not.

If you ask me, people ten or twenty years from now will still be listening to the Beatles, whose music is immortal, and "the Cure". Both Robert Smith and Beatles members understood the importance of melody and instrumentation. Is there any better melody than "Friday I'm in Love" or "Yesterday?"

The only reason people like any of those bands is because of nostalgia.
None of them are talented and every current band is better because they are more recent.

Maybe I'm too hard on the Stones, but not Led Zeppelin. The Stones did write some good ones like "Tears Go By", "Wild Horses" and "Angie". But all their hard rock and roll stuff like Midnight Rambler, even Satisfaction, is just noise and will be forgotten. I do like "Honky Tonk Woman" from Madison Square Garden in '69, though.

What? The Rolling Stones have already lasted the test of time! Though I agree that a lot of their stuff isn't that special.

If this is the criteria then the answer is pretty much all music that was popular during the time period in which people who are still alive are most likely to form an emotional attachment.

In ten or twenty years I'll be listening to Everclear and Green Day and Nelly. I can't wait to bump some Country Grammar at the retirement home in 2060.

These idiot DJs on FM always say that "Exile on Main St." was their best album. Huh? It's complete crap other than Happy. Even "Tumbling Dice", which is something played on the radio, is not that good.

Their best album was the live one "Get Your Ya Yas Out". As a live band, they weren't special anymore after '69. It's like they forgot how to play and Jagger forgot how to sing. Too many drugs for Keif.

I like Green Day, but they offer nothing beyond Good Riddance and September Ends.

Havent the Stones already tested time...and a number of other bands.

kids will find these bands and think they are almost NEW!

My Niece and Nephew think LUCY is a Hysterical show and the Nephew is watching John Wayne movies. Its VERY different from everything he see all day.

Yes, their music is still around after fifty years, but will it still be relevant another 50 years from now, if any of us live that long? For me standing the test of time is Beethoven's 9th or the 5th, Copeland's Appalachian Spring, maybe even Barber's Adagio as classical examples. All those compositions are timeless.

The Beatles have songs in that category, but not Zeppelin or Hendrix. The Stones possibly. Willie Nelson has one with "Always On My Mind".

It's all subjective, but IMO, certain bands can put out absolutely timeless songs on occasion.
Here is one example:

So simple, but the vocal harmonies are just so sublime, that I can't listen to this without getting a little teary-eyed.

The classic rock canon (Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Who) will last forever. Don't worry. As long as there are 15-year-old white boys, those bands will make new fans.

I always say that today is the best time to be a music fan. Whatever the date is, today is the best. Everything up to now is available for you to hear and it's never been easier to hear it.

I'm sorry you don't like anything other than charted singles.

Sigh...for me, it's Brown Sugar, but I like Mick Taylor's filthy guitar in that song.

"Brown Sugar" is okay. I have a soft spot for "She Smiled Sweetly" and "Ruby Tuesday" because of The Royal Tenenbaums. I just don't find them very interesting. There's not much they did that the Beatles or Led Zeppelin didn't do better.

There isn't a single Beatles or Zeppelin song better than "Satisfaction".
