What is about drumming that take such a physical toll on these guys? Phil Collins too. Guess pushing 60 is not a good age for pounding the skins. [img]After a series of reports on his physical issues, Rush drummer Neil Peart said that he is retiring from music. The prog icons have recently wrapped up the R40 tour as their final major trek ever, with several sources citing Mr. Peart's health and his struggle with chronic tendonitis as the top factor behind the decision. Neil tells Drumhead Magazine: "Lately Olivia [Louise, Neil's daughter] has been introducing me to new friends at school as 'My dad - he's a retired drummer.' True to say, funny to hear. "And it does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to... take yourself out of the game. I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song 'Losing It' ['Sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it']." Bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee previously said about the possibility of Rush touring again: "It doesn't look good." Read about it here. [/img] |

As anyone who has seen Neil play over the years, there is no wonder he can't keep up that kind of intensity live any more. Perhaps down the road he will get a little jazz combo going for the fun of it, as he is a jazz geek. As much as it pains me to say, because they are my favorite band, but I'm glad Rush is done at this point. While the Clockwork Angels album was a brilliant studio swan song, they really started losing it live - well, more like Geddy's voice started to lose it quite badly. Even with singing in a lower register for like the last 35 years for the most part, his voice was getting really creaky going back to the Time Machine tour (just watch the live DVDs since). And then Alex has said that his arthritis has gotten worse in recent years, and it was getting hard to play live for any length of time. Rush is done, and that's not a bad thing. Geddy can now enjoy his Blue Jays season tickets behind home plate without the prospect of a tour interruption. |

Rush just made an appearance on an episode of Chicago Fire. One of the band's tour guys was staying with family in the city when a fire broke out and they were saved by 51. Tour guy gave them 4 tickets to the show and back stage passes. They were definitely starting to show their age. |

Maybe Geddy and Alex should get Mike Portnoy on the phone as a replacement. Though there were more skilled drummers before and after (particularly Buddy), Peart will always be my favorite drummer. Tom Sawyer is likely the most influential drum composition in rock. |

I've seen him in concert in Palatine at the Cutting Hall, great show, have also seen Wackerman, Phillips with Toto, Steve Smith also at Cutting Hall. Only guys I'd add are Copeland (in numerous groups, Police, Orchestra, Rythmatists, Oyersterhead), and not the Blue Men, but the drummer for their show has an incredible job to do for that show. (Oh and Neil during the Presto tour, and Bruford/White during the Yes Union tour was pretty cool. |

Alan White is the Charlie Watts of Prog drumming. Not great but somehow has managed to get by. He is no where near the other members of Yes as far as chops & ability, & Bruford is better with one hand tied behind his back. Bill is one of the tastiest & musical drummers ever. |

I would say Portnoy is bloody likely to be his replacement. He isn't overly involved with anything, the Winery Dogs is more of a side project and he is obviously the most Peart influenced drummer out there. The problem is listening to that much rush might effect his sobriety... I'd need a drink for sure. Well he did stay sober playing at that dream theater so there is hope. |

They won't replace him, they're done. Geddy is on record saying if one leaves they won't carry on. They didn't replace him when he went on hiatus after wife/child died. Theu won't do it now. They're done as a group. |

I think except for studio music or like a Vegas residency Rush is done. Life's on also has some disease and I do not believe they go with another drummer ever. |
