What the hell? The FM dial is crap. Justin Bieber has some of the better songs in the top 40 now which tells you something. Critics seem to love the foulest language stuff you can imagine, like Kendrick Lamar, etc.

What do kids listen to nowadays? maybe they don't listen to anything.

There are clean versions of those songs that are played on the radio.

The popular ones with my daugther and friends are Taylor Swift, One Direction, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Fifth Harmony, Katy Perry, Adele, Rihanna

she does listen to some of that. I was wondering if I could introduce her to some actual good music. likely whatever I suggest will automatically be classified as horrible in her opinion.

Kids that age have no problem finding music on their own to listen to. Spotify...youtube... Pandora...last.fm... let her find her own music.

I remember as a kid, I asked my grandma for the Prodigy CD for Christmas. She found it in the store but didn't buy it. She called my dad the next day to tell him there was a song titled "Smack My Bitch Up." Looking back, I'm glad she didn't waste her money on that crap album.

FM has been crap for some time. I grew up liking AC/DC, Rush, etc., but for the love of Allah, how many more times do we need to hear Stairway?

My daughter is listening to much of the same crap as RPB's kid, but throw in Fallout Boy. I can get her to occasionally listen to indie, but for the most part she thinks all rock music is complete crap and lets me know on a daily basis.

I'm not going to endorse her listening to guys singing about hos (sp?) sucking on dicks.

Sit your damned kids down and make them listen to Brubeck, Miles, and Oscar Peterson.

Good luck trying to force a kid to listen to a certain type of music.

I'm sure the best thing you think you should do is strictly forbid her from listening to something she likes. Because that works so well with preteens.

ANYWAY your best bet is to start with a band like Capital Cities or some of that other radio friendly electroindiepop. Then again....I can't really think of any artists right now that don't throw in an occasional 'fuck'

endorsing and forcing are not synonyms.

This wouldn't be an issue if you went the Mr. Holland's Opus route.

I've tried but it is hopeless. I took my daughter when she was about 5 to the Sunday matinee at the Jazz Showcase to see Cyrus Chestnut. She "seemed" to enjoy it. we sat right in the front and Cyrus asked her some questions during the show. When we got home, mom asked her about it and she burst into tears.

Girls.

Don't try to force them into anything now, they won't do it. Your kid will listen to what other kids like until they are in or done with high school. At least that is my theory.

Hey look, I fucking rocked Paula Abdul albums for a good portion of my childhood. By high school though, if I traveled back in time, I would tear younger self a new asshole. But I went through the experience, which made me better in the end, so I want the same for my kid. They have to learn the hard way that listening to Fallout Boy is like listening to someone have their dick sawed off by Don Tiny.

You haven't even been a dad for a year yet. You certainly can't be a cranky old grandpa already. There is a large variety of music out there and there is a portion of all of it that is decent (except EDM and country)

Don't get me started. 18 yr old comes home in a week and the 12 yr old is a big "country" fan. I don't force my tunes on anyone in my
family, except maybe the wife occasionally but I have no clue what will happen on the 9 hour road trip scheduled in 10 days. Me thinks
everyone should bring their own headphones.
