Don't let the name fool you; these dark grey days are so good for On the Beach. Zuma, too: "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Looking for a Love" are the sound of a guy trying to cheer himself up but either not being able to or not really intending to.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow. When I was really into Young, that album was out of print.

Didn't quite "get" why he merited all the adulation until a few years ago. Had to grow older to appreciate him I guess.

You're made your first true steps into adulthood only when you gain an appreciation for both (a) Neil Young, and (b) dipping your toast in your egg yolks.

Much like David Bowie, he went through the '70s releasing not only high-quality albums but lots of them. Even the weakest of the bunch, Comes a Time, isn't a bad album. It just doesn't blow you away like Rust Never Sleeps, Harvest, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, or Tonight's the Night (though I'll admit I personally do not like Tonight's the Night very much).

Still gets me that Neil himself couldn't live up to his most famous lyric.

 One of my many food quirks is that I'll only eat eggs scrambled , the runny yolk thing kinda grosses me out. I'll have to settle for Neil only.

Yeah, I'm not really into runny yolks, either. I appreciate a good firmness to my eggs. I also load them with black pepper and red pepper flakes. You have to make eggs interesting.

Orange juice ... peanut butter toast ... eggs over easy/medium (none of that sunny side up shit ... nobody wants any clear goo on their food) ... give it a run this weekend ... maybe play 'Harvest Moon' while you do it.

I'm with ya' except for the peanut butter toast with eggs. Ill eat PB toast or eggs with plain toast but not eggs with PB toast.

It's these egg-spressions I never give

I hope I never get that old.

Over medium is the way to go. Balance is the key to life.

Over easy or medium is good by me.

I once heard Bernstein say that his music guy told him that Neil Young was really good. And Terry agreed. That's for real.

Tonight's the Night is great. I recall listening to that nonstop on a Chi-LA train trip circa 1992. Going through a snow storm in the middle of the night while up in the observation car is something I'll never forget.

So he does not, in fact, live with a cinnamon girl?

I've been digging Psychedelic Pill lately.

It starts out with a 27 minute song.

Neil Young for me is a radio guy. I rarely turn off one of his songs but I own zero albums.

His radio songs are his worst ones.

My My Hey Hey really knocked me out first time I played it. Had a big old stereo with infinity speakers. Sounded amazing.

Yeah, great album with only a couple of weaker tracks. I was familiar with some of the songs, but not On the Beach and the killer Ambulance Blues. That one is terrific.

There are so many great Neil Young albums, but On the Beach is the perfect hangover Sunday morning not feeling great about life album. It is pretty much pitch perfect.

Neil Young was always a peripheral guy from a genre and time before me. Only knew a handful of songs...I liked them, but didn't have much invested in Neil.

I recall watching him on MTV's Unplugged and it absolutely blew me away. I don't pretend to know his full catalog, but there is no one I like more for that type of acoustic / folk style.

Neil Young kicks ass.

Don't need the full catalogue, just the following albums:

Neil Young
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
After The Gold Rush
Harvest
On the Beach
Tonight's the Night
Zuma
Long May You Run
American Stars 'n Bars
Comes a Time
Rust Never Sleeps
Live Rust
Trans

Admittedly, Trans is the beginning of the end and not really part of the ass-kicking run that precedes it, but I like "Sample and Hold" and "Like an Inca" way more than most. "Rockin' in the Free World" and "Harvest Moon" are good songs too but with those exceptions, the aforementioned albums are all I need.

Listening to "Southern Man" as I opened this thread. If this song were like 15 minutes of jamming, I'd be fine with that.
