It's too bad the E was in charge of making the Rise and Fall of WCW as well as Monday Night Wars, would have been interesting to see a neutral party take on it. Oh we'll history is written by winners and all that.

Perhaps more intelligent wrestling minds could enlighten me as to how in the hell the WCW let themselves fall to pieces.

There was just a combination of really bad business and creative decisions over a two-year span. This is just my opinion, but I think it was a combination of things in no particular order:

1). Creative control contracts that allowed certain main event wrestlers to dictate their own booking and more importantly, to refuse to work with talented lower card wrestlers who may have needed a little more exposure.

2). Lazy main eventers who had guaranteed contracts and no longer cared about putting forth effort in the ring.

3). Eric Bischoff resting on his laurels and going "autopilot" on the nWo angle instead of giving the story a proper finish and allowing it to create new stars.

4). A backstage environment where lower and midcard wrestlers were actually punished and reprimanded for having good matches and "showing up the main event".

5). Using pay per view to push their TV show instead of the other way around.

6). Giving Kevin Nash the book.

7). Writing their television with the purpose of winning the ratings week instead of long-term planning.

8 ). Horrible spending decisions, like paying wrestlers for two years who never once appeared on TV, or paying celebrities a boatload of money for one-shot deals that did nothing to increase buyrates or TV ratings.

9). Completely killing their house show market.

10). Hiring Vince Russo.

I could go on, but a lot of that has to do with what went wrong.

Yeah, I remember being frustrated that the Luchador matches were so awesome and then Hogan would come out and give a shitty main event.

Nash should've never beat Goldberg.

I remember the Mysterio fiasco. How about the time Nash laid down to give Hogan the belt back?

Good stuff in this thread, especially by OKC.

WCW was a tragedy, but they literally killed the company by themselves. Perfect opportunity, they had the depth of talent, the ratings, the older stars, younger guys who could be stars and an actual CEO of the parent company that LOVED wrestling.

Sad.

I think I'm going to go bump my Worst Matches and Feuds Thread.

I don't have time to write a book, but OKC hit on most of it. It wasn't one thing. It was a combination of bad. If you really want to simplify it, the heat off their big angle was gone. Attitude Era, Four Horsemen, NWO, etc. A big angle has a shelf life, no matter how hot. Once the NWO was stale, nothing was there to go on. You still had talent, but they weren't developing any new stars. The old guys were burying the guys trying to come up. Plus, WWF had the better product. Much like WCW had when the NWO got hot. The casual WCW crowd, like many people posting in this thread, grew up and stopped caring in 1999.

Also when the WWE came out with Mini-Goldberg. They not only mocked the WCW but Pro Wrestling. Why slap yourself in the face?

This hits the nail on the head. Started high school around that time and moved from wrestling into heavy drinking.

I remember Heenan being interviewed in the dying days of WCW. He was asked whet he would do to improve the product. His reply,"Roll a grenade in the locker room."

He was a guy. He had some good moments and has a nice story, but that is about it. He is not even close to "great" in any area of the business. Considering him great is an insult to the really great guys in Wrestling history

I completely and totally disagree with that.

As Peeps pointed out, Page was hurt by getting a late start in the business. And I know that people like to bring up Page's friendship with Bischoff, but he had to earn his spot. He worked his way up through shitty gimmicks and bad angles for 6 years. And when he finally got the ball in 1997, he ran with it and proved he deserved it. The only thing Bischoff gave him was an opportunity. Other than that, Page was self-made from the finisher to the gimmick to the catchphrases, to the wardrobe. And he got himself over like rover.

And in 1997 and 98 when most of the main event roster (including Sting) couldn't be bothered to take a bump anymore, Page was in there mixing it up with guys like Benoit, Jericho, Guerrero, Raven, Saturn, Booker T, etc. working his ass off to keep up with them. Hell, DDP pretty much rejuvenated Randy Savage's career and got an extra year of usefulness out of him. I have nothing but respect for DDP.

I don't disagree with anything you wrote. I just don't think that puts him in an all time great category.

I do not have any problems with DDP. He was good at every aspect of the business and his story of being a self made wrestler is real nice. Just not enough to be an all time great IMO.

To me,the biigest fan "FU" was the WWE's mini-Goldberg. You don't have anything fresh,so let's mock your opponent.

I hear what you're saying. It was pretty classless of WWE at the time, considering that they were easily beating WCW in the ratings by then. No reason to do that.

It's just making a mockery of your "sport". What is "fake" real and what is "fake" fake? Just like the Hornswaggle BS.
