I have been watching a lot of the old heavyweight fights lately from the golden age of boxing. Personally, I think that Joe Frazier got a bad rap for his losses against Foreman. Being five years older than Foreman, he was not the same fighter in '73 when he fought foreman, as he was in '71 when he beat Ali or in the late 60s. Despite being somewhat undersized for a heavy, Frazier dominated his opponents in '68 and '69 with lightning quickness and ferocity, which probably has not been seen since. I doubt any fighter could have beaten Frazier in his prime, not Ali, Foreman, Tyson, Holyfield, any of them. And through it all, he was the humblest guy in the world and had to suffer a lot of abuse from Ali that only showed Ali's bad sportsmanship. To the day he died, Frazier never thought he lost any of his bouts with Ali. Anyway, here is a fight that some of you may never have seen, but ranks as one of the greatest ever. It was between Foreman and Ron Lyle in '76. Might not have been the prettiest fight, but it was an absolute slugfest, with both fighters knocking each other out multiple times. Just an incredible fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLXt7nLUgDU |

Tyson vs. Slamming Sammy Scaff. Such a great fight. I thought Scaff had him until his face got in the way. |

I thought he killed him at first. Turns out he just knocked his eyes crossed upon standing. Even Smokin' Joe looked like he also caught those hands. |

How is that for class. |

Ali was overrated and a draft-dodging hypocrite. He claimed to be a man of God, but then demeaned Frazier repeatedly, calling him all sorts of bad names like "Uncle Tom" and "dumb tool of the white establishment." That's what you do to your own kind? Yeah, he might have beat Foreman in Zaire, but he did it rather cowardly on the ropes after taking a beating for seven rounds. And then at the end of his career, his former sparring partner, Larry Holmes, gave him a real ass-wupping, if not brain damage. Whether he had the belt or not, Frazier always acted like a champion, and so did Foreman. Ali acted anything but. He was the real tool. You saw who the greatest was in Frazier vs. Ali 1, probably the best fight ever. With both fighters still in their prime, Frazier KO'd Ali and beat the man in a unanimous decision. The 15th round was the icing on the cake. Ali knew he had given Frazier all he had, but Frazier triumphed, because his spirit was unconquerable. That is the true mark of a great champion. |

Sort of going off topic....anyone remember James "Quick" Tillis? Used to watch him on Top Rank Boxing on ESPN back in the day. Loved that guy. |

I watched this match (Foreman vs Lyle) with my father. My father was the biggest fan of Foreman. What a great fearless fighter George foreman. I saw many matches but I still remember a fight Frazier vs Foreman. What was the great match. Although Foreman won the match but Frazier won many hearts. Foreman was one of the hardest hitting punchers. He was the killer fighter of his era. I always see a match with excitement because I really love boxing. |
