Help me whittle down a list (especially veteran MMA fans): Name 5 biggest fights in UFC history (in terms of significance, buzz, gate, etc)

My list was

Chuck vs Tito Ortiz 2
Serra vs GSP 2
Brock vs Frank Mir 2
Chuck vs W Silva
Randy vs Chuck 3

That was off the top of my head about 10 mins ago. Looking back on it now I remember the Serra/Gsp 2 in Canada being such a big deal and people being so hyped for the fight. I would replace that with Griffin vs Bonnar 1 for sure now as that was much more significant for the sport of MMA as a whole. Chuck vs Tito 2 was probably the UFC's first money fight and one of their first, if not the first UFC ppv's to do over a 1 million buys. Brock vs Frank Mir 2 was UFC 100 so it had that behind it, plus the juggernaut name Brock Lesnar. Silva vs Chuck was very important and it was an epic fight. Fans wanted to see that fight for years and it finally happened with two of the sports biggest stars. Randy and Chuck 3 might have been a bit before my time as a huge MMA fan so I don't really know too much about the landscape of the sport around than.

I would think that Forrest and Bonnar in the TUF finale would have to be in the discussion. And I would also think that a Matt Hughes match would be as well.

Just which Matt Hughes fight? I would want to say won that he won because he did so much for the sport, but honestly I think his biggest fight was with GSP the second time as it was kind of a passing of the torch and moved the sport to a new guard.

With that being said I noticed the pattern of rematches being the biggest fights in UFC history.

The match vs. Newton where he won the belt and did the big slam is a classic. Either fight with GSP should be mentioned.

I think Diaz/GSP would fall into this, if it happens. Sonnen/Silva 2 will go down as the biggest up to this point, passing Mir/Lesner 2.

5 biggest fights in UFC history (in terms of significance, buzz, gate, etc). In no particular order:

Chuck vs Tito 2 (ufc 66) first million buys show

Shamrock vs Franklin - first ufc event on free tv (cable)

Chuck vs Rampage ufc 71 (ufc hit some sort of mainstream peak at that time)

Brock vs Randy ufc 91 (another million + buys. this would be #1 for me).

Brock vs Mir 2 ufc 100 1.6 million buys (hendo vs bisping, gsp title bore. my #2)

honorable mention: hughes vs royce, sonnen vs silva 1 and 2

I didn't get in untill recently, but I would say the Biggest Fight was UFC 100 between Lesnar/Mir 2.

That is when ESPN started to cover the sport with more of it shows a little more and it did help with what Lesnar said after the fight too.

A possible 2nd, was when Rampage fought Liddell too around Memorial Day in 07 I think, because I do remember ESPNnews being over that one too.

Are you grading fights on PPV purchases? ..because Tito was a bitch who ducked chuck for years..he was afraid of chuck and chuck beat his ass both times..and lesnar never belonged in the ufc, let alone a few title shots and a belt in his brief and disappointing career. The Bonner fight was great but I think that was on cable tv. Silva is going to tear this clown Sonnen apart..2nd round ko

If I am right, I would say UFC 52 when he beat Trigg, I seen them talking about the rivalry on ESPN.com, if this is the fight when Trigg nailed Hughes in the groin and after some punches, Hughes picks Trigg up carries him from one side to the other and slams him and makes him submit with the rear naked choke. I remember seeing a video of this and the crowd was going crazy when the slam happend.

TO add to my earlier list, I would also say Lesnar-Couture since Lesnar became champ that night.

I don't know where to begin with all this nonsense:

Not grading on PPV buys, just staying most important fights in UFC history. Most significant for the sport. Lesnar's fight with Mir at UFC 100 was one of the most significant fights ever regardless of what you think about his fighting skills. That PPV holds the record for the highest buy rate and probably will for awhile actually. Tito and Chuck 2 was a very important fight for the sport and did over 1 million PPV buys and very UFC fan around that time HAD to watch that fight. Silva vs Sonnen 2 has gotta be up there as well really. Sonnen has helped Silva more than any other fighter has helped anyone else. Really if Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen never fought and Anderson retired after the Vitor Belfort fight would you really think he is the best fighter of all time or a guy that just fought in the weakest division of all time? If Anderson defeats Chael on Saturday(and I have my doubts that he will) people can than start claiming he is the best fighter of all time. Until than Fedor holds that distinction.

I agree with Diaz vs GSP. They have to make this fight and I'm pretty sure they will in 2013 as long as both of them stay healthy and Nick stays off the weed. Regardless of what Carlos Condit thinks, I don't think he will beat GSP and that will eventually set up a fight with Nick Diaz.

On the buys number, is that Worldwide or just America.

THe reason I ask, with as big as Silva is in Brazil and the way Sonnen has made some comments about Brazil, could see a lot of them getting this fight.

PPV is a bigger deal in America than anywhere else. I had heard that in England the UFC is apart of the ESPN package and in Brazil they get their fights broadcast over free TV. I believe that to be the case, I'm not 100% sure about that though.
