Saddened to read the news of passing of William Moody / Percy Pringle / Paul Bearer last night. He is one of the greats and of my favorites during the 90's. Looking back on his promos now they are weird, over the top and downright silly at times - but that was the era and few did it better than Paul. I'd almost need to consider where to place him in regards to my "top promos" rankings. Certainly he isn't top five, but he was one of the best the WWF had during his first stint with undertaker, especially as Hogan, Flair and others started leaving the company. He was the perfect mouth piece for the Undertaker at the time and I do wonder if Taker could have remained over with Brother Love or no one by his side. Paul Bearer added to the mystery of Taker for me me as a kid. Some great moments at his Funeral Parlor as well. Most specifically when Hogan, Flair and Taker were feuding and I remember one with Jake Roberts as well. Thanks PB for some great entertainment over the years.

Without a manager, the Undertaker character would have failed initially and gone into bad gimmick heaven. Bearer was the one who got Taker over in the beginning.

Damn shame to hear the news. Always came off as one of the nicest guys out there. If I remember the interviews with Paul correctly, wwf definitely came up with the undertaker gimmick. Brother Love was taker's first manager so Paul wasn't even there when taker started so it couldn't really be his idea. Paul came in to interview with Vince and patterson and they asked what he did in "real life" and he said he was a mortician. they cracked up like "you gotta be kidding me" and the rest is history. he also went back to being a mortician after wrestling.

That doesnt neccessarily mean it wasnt Paul's idea, but since you are who you are Ill believe you.

 Don't believe what you read, I might be crapping myself..wasn't DiBiase his first manager in wwf and then Brother Love? Or was he just part of his team at Survivor Series and had Brother Love with him?

DiBiase introduced him, but Brother Love was with him. That was November 1990. Bearer debuted in February of '91. After thinking about this for a bit, I think Bob's assessment is correct.

very sad, one of the all time greats.

I think a lot of his work in Texas is underrated and overlooked. He did some great stuff there

this isn't the interview I was referring to, but this is pretty good. An interview with Keller from December.

In this episode of the PWTorch Livecast & VIP Aftershow with Wade Keller, more than two-and-a-half hours live with Paul Bearer, including a 45 minutes VIP-exclusive portion with great backstage stories of life on the road with The Freebirds and what it's like to be on the road for the holidays. Lots of caller questions on a wide array of topics including WrestleMania, Undertaker's future, the Hall of Fame, and much much more.

Now who will induct Taker whenever he goes into the HOF? Percy's dead and Pritchard's in TNA. Perhaps Shawn?

IMO it will be either Shawn or HHH.

Not Kane?

Post subject:  Re: RIP Paul Bearer

It's probably safe to say it's one of those 3. Most likely depends on who else is going in the year Taker goes in. If jannetty is going in, hbk would induct him so trips or kane would do taker and so on.

I'm watching Jim Cornette and Paul B shoot and according to Paul in Dec 1990 he said he was done with wrestling and there was nowhere left for him to go and he was gonna go back to Mobile. He was talking to a guy who he used to manage who happened to be working for Vince at the time, Rick Rude. Rude called him back with a phone number and said this is Vince's home number. He goes to Vince's house for an interview with Vince, Pat, and J.J. Vince knew his wrestling background, but not his education or personal background. Vince is reading Paul's resume and just stops and goes completely silent for a few seconds. Starts laughing hysterically. Paul about shits himself. Vince is cracking up and looks over at JJ and Pat and says "this guy's a real mortician" and they all just die laughing and VInce is doing the Vince laugh and Pat is clapping and giggling and Paul about shits again. Paul had no idea about the Taker gimmick whatsoever (and he hadn't debuted yet). He left Vince's house with a contract but had no idea what his role was going to be. JJ later called him at home and said Vince is going to call you Paul Bearer and described the entire gimmick to him. No mention on how the timeline works with DiBiase, Brother Love, etc.

Marty Jannetty is a hall of famer?

It really should be Vince. Undertaker has remained loyal to Vince since day one and has generated a ton of revenue for that company.

Of course not, but in my world of 80's bias, he's in my personal hof. then again, if Koko is in, there's hope for jannetty. Problem is he'd no show

Koko is in there?

What are the peramaters?

I mean everyone who made it to the WWF is a huge success in the wrestling business right? Shouldnt the hall just be for the greats?

I think it should be just for the greats and I remember being really annoyed when Koko was inducted.

Agree. Koko really lowered the bar for HOF'ers.

Apparently its more the Wreslting hall of fame then the WWF/E Hall of fame.

If it were only by WWF/E you could get rid of...

Eddie Guerrero
Tito Santana
Greg Valentine
Jim Duggan
Koko

I disagree on Eddie, but I see why you say that. He had a very short period of time with WWE in the grand scheme.

Those guys SCREAM Intercontinental.

If I were making a hall of fame it would be reserved for Championship level guys

The parameters for induction are people sitting at a production meeting and mentioning a name. Vince gives it a thumbs up or you get a Cranky Vince rant. Not only is Koko in, but Mike and Chris Von Erich are in. I'd keep Eddie, Tito and Valentine in easy.
