This fad needs to go away ASAP. Any coach who does this deserves to lose. Kickers are too fucking good to think hat the odds are with you on this strategy. if they are going to miss one it would be the first one. The odds of them missing the second one are much slimmer. How many more years of watching this stupid bullshit will there be before coaches realize that the AREN'T really smarter than the game? Any coach making the decision to do this is fucking stupid.

If i were an owner or a GM interviewing for a head coach right now, i would tell them point blank if you ever do this and it costs us a game you are fucking fired, go clear your shit out of your office and get the fuck out of here.

Honestly, it's irrelevant. The kick doesn't change. Of all the things coaches do wrong, this is low on the list. We wait thirty seconds for the money shot.

it is irrelevant, if you consider winning or losing a playoff game irrelevant.

The thing is, kicking teams caught on and realized they could get a practice kick in by snapping the ball after the whistle blows.

The timeout is called before the kick. Unless you see the future, it makes no difference. It's akin to a blackjack player belieiving in the bust card. You have the same chance of a make/miss on the first or second kick.

In this specific game, Bryant purposely missed the first kick as he clearly said in the post game interview. He did not follow through but still kicked it to prevent an injury. He said he does like a pitcher does in baseball. Nice try though.

Why would he miss it on purpose? Makes no sense.

Plus, if it's an outdoor game, he get's the opportunity to gauge the wind's effect on the ball by trying to make it.

Im going to go ahead and disagree there Denis. Second kick gives a kicker a chance to correct whatever it was he did wrong on the first kick if missed , or gives him an added confidence boost if he made the first kick. Plus its been shown icing the kicker doesnt work .

Edit for attribution from wikipedia In their book Scorecasting, Tobias J. Moskowitz and L. Jon Wertheim analyzed “pressure” kicks from 2001 through 2009 while controlling for the distance of the field-goal attempt. They found that icing the kicker certainly doesn’t produce the desired effect, and in some cases might even backfire. Moskowitz found that when an opposing coach iced the kicker with 15 seconds or fewer left to go in the game, those kickers tended to be more accurate.

Correct.

So If I was the defensive team, I would tell my guys to block the kick even if the whistle is clearly blown. Dont give him the practice shot

And Great Signature

i enjoyed learning of justin tucker running onto the field late in yesterdays denver-baltimore game during a time out and taking a practice kick while the officials watched and the defense stood around saying "what the fuck?". no rule against it, may as well take the practice while you can.

I thought there was a rule against it and they just didn't do anything about it.

A rule with no consequences if you break it isnt much of a rule.

Does anyone know when this fad started? I tried to google it but didn't find any answers. I could swear that I never saw the freezing the kicker strategy when I was a kid.

The blackjack analogy was a horrible one. Totally irrelevant.

The irony of a card player not being able to read the kicker's I-meant-to-do-that bluff is priceless.

And delivering it all in an incredibly arrogant fashion.

Nice try though.

It's been less than 10 years and I seem to remember Shanny the Rat having something to do with it.

Correct. Not sure if he came up with the idea or not but Shanahan popularized it for sure. He successfully did it in some high profile game and coaches haven't stopped doing it since.

Were I a kicker, I'd love to have a practice kick.

A smart coach is going to "ice" his own kicker to give him a practice kick soon.
