who will pull the first john fox and challenge for a defensive PI call only to have the refs come back to say it was actually offfensive PI?

It is but I get it. The refs brought it on themselves with that Saints Rams game. There’s a good chance that will be the worst blown call, considering how blatant it was and the situation and stakes, ill ever see in my life in any sport. They had to do something.
This will sound idealistic, but I think they should lessen replay. It has turned the refs into cowards. This is definitely a reaction to the Saints, but that was a one-off. More often than not, they are calling it too much. IMO.
I don't think they should lessen the replay system, but definitely the time spent reviewing should be cut down. The replay screen should automatically shut off after 45 seconds. If that happens, then the call on the field stands. A blatantly missed call is probably going to be obvious after the first or second replay shown. If after that 45 seconds and a few replays the call to be overturned is not obvious, then looking at it for 2-3 minutes is not likely going to change anything. That way the game stops for literally 90 seconds at most.

That should never happen. If the coaches are challenging a specific non-call, then they have to stipulate that when they are throwing the flag. "Hey, we think our WR was interfered with," or "#99 was holding," and the refs can ONLY look at that. Again, 45 seconds is plenty of time to see if there was PI or holding, etc.

Plus shorten the time to throw the flag. Don’t give the team time to replay. Give the coach 10 seconds to throw a flag meaning someone saw it on the sidelines in real time or you are trusting your player.

First and foremost this.

This is essentially a couple of free first downs for the offense assuming they are the least bit competent.

The NFL needs to copy college. Take it out of the coaches hands.

College football games are like 6 hours long though. That’s not a system I’d look to replicate.

Just get rid of it.
The difference isn't that big. The average SEC game last year was 3 hours and 26 minutes, with a 20 minute halftime. The average NFL game was 3 hours and 12 minutes with a 12 minute halftime.

So, if not for the halftime difference, it would be about a 6 minute difference.

College also has a longer fourth quarter because the clock stops more often.

Replay is better in college. It just is. Let the officials officiate the game. Turning coaches into decision makers on incorrect calls is just dumb.

Overtime can also add an hour plus to some college games.

This should be a good thing, but the NFL will still find a way to fuck this up. The whole coach challenge thing is terrible. The Penalty for a wasted challenge should be much more severe so it is used sparingly.

That's pretty borderline.

Could be a shitshow next year.

Sapp is right. As for the SB call by the book it was interference.
