But let's get real, he's probably not gonna hit. Not even a little bit.
Nobody knows anything about this shit. He’s got the physical traits and the best possible situation to develop with low expectations and a lifer scout who risked his career in his first GM chance to trade up and draft him.
Overall I’ve talked myself into this draft even more than the average fan would. We got our asses fucking kicked by SF last year. A WR isn’t fixing that. I like Dillon and the guy they took in the 3rd could be an intriguing piece. Gutekunst bet his job on this draft. If he’s wrong we have to start over 2-3 years from now anyway which was always the case. If he’s right we continue to have a 30+ year hold on best QB in the division
Man, every GM bets his job on every draft. You only get so many. Ryan Pace, given an extraordinarily long leash, will finish with six drafts to his name. Had just one of them been better he probably wouldnt be staring down the barrel of five wins and getting fired. So that bit of cope you are clinging to doesn't really hold any water, its not like he's under appreciably more pressure than half the GM's in the league.
I dont think you've really thought through how to beat SF, or at least how to mimic them. I know you love your mediocre front seven and that its pains you to acknowledge this fact, but none of your front seven guys would even see the field if they were on SF. The Bears have regressed so much that yeah, its not outside the realm of possibility that ZD Smith is on balance better than Khalil Mack at this stage of the downslope of his career. Certainly he's better than Robert Quinn's corpse (though I'd probably have rather had Floyd, but whatever...another discussion that).
But SF? No way. They have studs everywhere. They just traded away one for the meanest SOB in this draft, I'd probably rather have Kinlaw than DeForest Buckner just from a strict on-field perspective not even taking into account contract. You are not going to out-49ers the 49ers with your current front seven. Because the strategy to beating the Packers to just run them over.
Now as we saw Mahomes do the best counter to that is to have a high functioning offense that can score quickly. The Packers are one of like four teams in the league that even has the requisite tool to have that kind of offense, but they have saddled him with a truly abysmal group of weapons in this odd attempt to mimic the latest fad in the NFL. Even skipping the obvious problems with Jordan Love, the rest of the draft doesn't make sense.
Well, you’re wrong about a few things. 1st, Gutekunst has more leash than most due to the franchise he works for, and 2nd, I’m not the one making these moves. It’s not me thinking about how to beat or mimic SF. The Kinlaw/Buckner comment is ridiculous too but doesn’t need addressing.
But yeah this draft was a reaction to those SF games. Clearly. I don’t agree with it but clearly Gutekunst thought GB wasn’t close and decided to build for the future. We can still compete next year thanks to the offseason of the division rivals but this draft is always going to come back to Love.
