What do you think? Numbers/Dominance suggest so, but IMO, the bitch move of retiring early should disqualify him. This isn't even a Barry Sanders situation, IMO. The Lions now are not nearly as bad as when Sanders left. I don't think you can let a guy in the HOF that walked out on his fans/teams like that.

It is hard enough for great receivers that didn't quit and go home to get in. No.

Fucker wouldn't take years off his life to play for a shitty team in a shitty city. What an asshole!

But other players do. They get to make the HOF. I respect his decision, but can't let him in.

Gale Sayers played like 4 seasons and he's in.

I think Calvin can get in too.

Seven.

He played 5 full seasons, and was barely able to step on the field in seasons 6 & 7 (2 games each).

Calvin Johnson is probably a Hall of Famer. There are several WR's that should be Hall of Famers that aren't.

Right, there's a difference between being forced off the field by injury and just leaving the game because you want to. Sayers was compelled to retire, Johnson decided.

Not only that but the Lions got better once he left. If I had my druthers, Antonio Brown and Larry Fitz are the only two modern day WR's I would let in.

You answered your question in the first line - numbers and dominance suggest yes......so, yes. Length of career is going to be something that is not considered as important going forward for the football HOF. Especially as more guys retire early due to wanting to live past the age of 45.

They are really going to have to redefine "dominance" by a WR with these modern day passing rules though.( In terms of their HOF evaluations)... I kinda of a agree that Julio has a good shot as well. That Falcon's team isn't even playoff caliber without him. But CJ retired, and Stafford actually got BETTER!

9 years of dominance and holds receiving yards in a season at almost 2000 yards.

Where else but in csfmb can it be argued in the same week that Stafford is a hoffer and Calvin Johnson is not.

Also has one of the better nicknames of late.

This ^

Plus it's a really simple test for me: would I have paid money to watch this guy work for almost a decade? With him it's an easy yes.

Yet the team got better when he left. If Stafford left they are as bad as the Browns. (Stafford has no shot at HOF either).

Stafford and Johnson are both HoFers.

x does not always equal y. Football has so many factors and year to year, teams change a lot. Just because the Lions have been better, does not mean it was due to Johnson retiring. Brady never won a Super Bowl when he had Randy Moss as a receiver. Does that mean the Patriots were better due to Moss leaving once he was off the team?

He's joining the Eagles. He may have read this thread and done some personal self-reflection.

Yes. He was the best guy at the position for several years.

I think he retired at 32, that is past peak years for wide receivers yet he was highest paid in the league. The lions had plenty of notice and a chance to retool for his absence. You take Stafford off the lions but a full offseason to redeploy his 25 million dollar cap hit and you can’t say they won’t be better.

Huge difference comparing removing player to injury compared to end of season retirement.

Teams apparently asking the Lions if they'll trade away the rights to Calvin.
