If Campbell doesn't break his collarbone, this deal doesn't happen and the Bengals don't end up with a first round pick in '12 and and a first or second in '13.

The irony is that is collarbone was broken by the Browns. Thank you Cleveland.

I would have dealt Palmer, someone who you're getting zero from, for a second round pick only. That it's a first and second and possibly two firsts is insane.

This really worked out well for everyone - Bengals get two picks (last year's first and second picks were A.J. Green and Dalton), Oakland has hope for 2011 after starting 4-2, and Palmer gets to play in the NFL, in his home state of California (his wife is from San Jose) and play for a contender.

+1. This is almost unbelievably bad. Palmer was one of the ten worst starting QB's in the league.

I'll still go pick up Denarius Moore just in case...

I wouldn't say everyone. I'd be quite pissed today if I were a Raiders fan.

It's just like the Bears...why would you want to keep picks that you're just going to draft guys like Heyward-Bey?

Because in no way am I certain that Carson Palmer is even better than Kyle Boller at this point. I wouldn't have given higher than a 4th rounder for him. I'm pretty certain Kyle Orton is a better option and could've been had for much less.

I thought about the Orton thing as well. He is clearly a better option right now than Palmer. I can only assume the Broncos have no desire to trade him within the conference.

I hear people on the radio saying that it is a good deal for both sides and I have to laugh. Cincy made out on this deal like bandits. You get a 1st and a 2nd pick for a guy that you werent going to get anything out of. Unreal. I have to eat my words about the Bengals also as I said they wouldn't win 5 games this year and right now they are 4-2 and their defense looks good and A.J. Green is a stud. Dalton has also played really well for a rookie. Good God the Bengals made out on this.

The Broncos management would have to be the most inept in the league if they were offered a first rounder for Orton and refused. It's not like they'd be giving Oakland a superstar. Oakland would still lose in the first or second round of the playoffs, best case scenario. And Orton might not be as good as Jason Campbell even so they'd have to let him walk anyway.

Orton would have been a better option, agreed. But I think Palmer can still be respectable.

Guys, I think you meant within the division...Before he died about 10 days ago, Al Davis couldn't stand the Broncos and would've never made the move for Kyle Orton.

As for Orton, someone on a Purdue site said that an Orton trade couldn't work because his cap number is too high. I don't know if it's true or not.

Palmer supposedly restructured his deal down to $6M or so, I can't imagine Orton is making so much more than that that he wouldn't do the same to play for a playoff contender. Either way you slice it though that is a horrible trade for Oakland.

Orton hasn't made what Palmer has in his career. He needs to keep all the money he can.

Are you serious? That sounds like Sprewell needing to feed his kids. If that's Orton's prerogative that's fine, but I'm sure he can sacrifice $1M to play for a contender instead of sitting through a miserable season in Denver. Especially considering his potential ROI if he plays well with Oakland, he could end up making even more for his career.

Yes. I'm serious. Palmer has made as much in one season as Orton has in his career. Orton doesn't know what his next contract is going to look like.

It's much easier for Palmer to give up a few million he wasn't going to get anyways.

Orton's window of teams that he can go to next year has went down alot from this year. Miami will have Andrew Luck, Cincy doesn't need a QB. Seattle maybe the Jets even though they spent a shit ton of picks/money to get Sanchez(hint:its not working out) and the Redskins.

All the more reason to keep as much money as he can.

It's really amazing that so much stuff can change in a year. Denver was stupid for not getting as much as they possibly could for Orton from Miami. Now it seems like they are content to not do anything but wait for Luck to fall into their laps and prey that Indy wins 1 game.

Yeah. They had to see the Tebow stuff coming.

That doesn't make sense. If what you said is true than Orton is making less than $6.5M/year and the deal would work. If hes making more than that than what I said still applies and he's not struggling for money.

Chris - don't be so sure on Miami. I'm not sure the Colts will win a game this year. Not sure they even want to. And as usual, at least 1/4 of the league will have a QB worse than Orton and could use his services. A team like the Redskins could win 11 games with career-average play from Orton this year.

His cap hit is almost $9 million. Prior to this year, in his whole career, he had made roughly $6.8 million.

Compare that to Carson Palmer who will be well over $50 million in his career, and he was going to get nothing by sitting out.

How much of hit would Orton make to the Raiders' cap THIS year? The team had about $6M available this year.
