Eliminating kickoffs & any aspect of the kicking game is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I saw some injury stats a while back & I'm pretty sure that most football injuries occur on non kicking plays. If the NFL wants to make the game safer, then make a helmet to helmet hit a game misconduct, & they'll be eliminated almost entirely.
For the love of God, WTF is going on in this country? No one is forcing anyone to play the game of football. Its a physical game & injuries will occur.

They should eliminate the kicking game entirely and play the way we did on the empty lot at the corner of Trumbull and Crain.

One of the dumbest things in sports is the fact that steroidal brutes slam into each other with a fury going up and down a field only to let some twee little former soccer player decide the game.

I dont necessarily agree with the commentary in this post, but 100% agree with the premise. Eliminate kicking altogether. Punts, Fg's, and kickoffs. It would be a much more entertaining game, and no more dangerous.

When I first read this, I thought it said "f@g's".

Why is it so dumb though? Couldn't it be said that the kicking game is dumb in the first place? I understand that we grow to like what we're used to, but try to look at it objectively. Would you find it odd if after every run scored in a baseball game, a kicker took the field in an attempt to score 1/6 of a run by putting a ball through some uprights or would that make baseball a better game?

I'll assume that this was a joke.

Well, I'm just pointing out that the kicking would seem odd if you hadn't known it as it is your entire life.

There's only a few ways to make football safer:

Make the players slower, smaller or more padded.

1. Smaller, they could impose weight limits.
2. Slower, they could make the fields play slower.
3. Make them wear enough pads to make them safer from injury.

Other thoughts:

Probably the best thing would be to eliminate Thursday night football.
They could make a second bye week.
What about taking away two regular season games and adding them to the playoffs?
Do something with the helmets so that hitting someone with one doesn't cause an injury.
They could eliminate hitting the quarterback who doesn't have the ball.
Instead of fining or suspending a player after an illegal hit they could just throw them out of the game immediately.
There's really only so much you can do before you're playing flag football with two hand touch.

Excellent idea! Stripe the helmets.

They should try to get the players that are causing the most injuries out of the game.

Did they test any of those poison gasses on you in Basic or something?

I was half-kidding in my post, but really Darkside, if you think about it without just accepting that that's the way it's always been, doesn't the whole kicking aspect of football sort of seem like some strange oddity that was tacked on to a completely different game?

Well, if you don't get a first, you just give the ball to the opponent where ever you happen to be?
No punting? Or do you do touch rules and just heave it as far as you can throw it???
No field goals? Just touchdowns worth 7 points?

I dunno. Converting to a methane based life form only sounds weird if you've been breathing oxygen forever.

Yeah, I don't know. The extra point is the thing the seems the strangest to me. I really don't see the point of it.

I'm not sure how or why the scoring system in football evolved the way it did. I know that touchdowns weren't always worth six points and I think field goals may have had different value as well.
