I agree Poles is inconsistent as a mover and shaker but it's misleading to frame this as just one pick on the top 50. What hea done is this:

Here's what he's actually done to improve last year's team, some of which was done mid season last year:

Claypool (effectively the Bears second 2023 first round pick)
Wright
Moore

So the above is basically the Bears 2023 day one draft class.

He gave up too much for Claypool (essentially a 1st round pick) and probably still could have had Moore trading from 2nd or 4th..

..my point is that he’s bad at trading and maximizing compensation, he also overpays. That’s a bad combo and I fear is that he may be a poor talent evaluator on top of all that and with will lead to us dealing with more bullshit over the next couple of seasons because we have yet another incompetent GM running the show and the McCaskeys will hold on to him too long instead of recognizing the problem.

We’ll see on his talent evaluation, but he’s put this team with a lot of holes in a bad position to improve thru the draft when they should have been able to use that 1st round pick to feast on the next two drafts .

Poles traded for Claypool when the Bears were still a playoff contender. He turned 5 draft picks into 13 last year. The Eagles trade was AWFUL, but Philly gave up something for a guy they would have gotten for free.

The Bears are better in every area except defensive line since Poles took over and they are positioned for future success.

The Bears weren’t a playoff contender. They traded Roquan and Quinn, essentially conceding that and ultimately finishing with the worst record in the league.

Their day one draft class is a legit #1 WR, a WR 2 who will play 90% of your offensive snaps and your day one starter at RT?

Sign me the fuck up for that. There are teams drafting guys that will only play on 3rd down, and that is their day one draft class.

The Bears were 3-4. No one knew they would draft #1 or not win another game.

Really surprised Nolan Smith is still on the board, he's great naturally against the run and if he adds 10-15 pounds watch out.

It's not an exaggeration:

They traded the 32nd pick or whatever for Claypool. Technically not a first round pick but close enough. So when the bears don't pick at 32 tomorrow it's because we "selected" Claypool with that pick.

The Bears did "pick" at #1 today: they selected Moore and more draft capital for this year and next.

Then they picked Wright.

No comment on if this is good or not but this is an accurate account of how the Bears translated their 2023 day one draft picks into assets. It's clear Poles didn't think much of the WR class which is why he spent parts of two picks on veteran WRs.

He ran like a 4.2 and he's a leader.

meh. They passed on the best player in the draft and selected a RT when a LT deserves that a high of a pick, their #1 wr is good but not great and their WR2 was mediocre.

The ranking of important positions in the NFL goes like this:

1. QB
2. Every other position (tie)

For better or worse they are all in on Fields, he needs targets and protection. If you don’t like this Bears draft, it it’s because you don’t like Fields, which is understandable. If Herbert was out QB nobody would want a DL guy any everyone on here would be screaming for OL and WR.

That’s what we gots.

Agreed. He's going to put up huge run blocking numbers. So will Moore.
