It's not as if we as a nation rolled out of bed this morning and realized "whoa, a team called the Redskins is mad racist!" People have been uncomfortable with this for decades. The American Indian Movement was occupying Alcatraz in the name of Indian rights in the 1970s; are we to believe the issue of the Redskins never came up?

The way I made my peace with it was by realizing that language mutates and evolves, and that to the extent that "redskin" was an racial slur in active circulation in the past, it isn't one anymore, and has come to mean nothing more than "a player for DC's NFL team." People want to equate it with [BLEEP], [BLEEEEP], and of course, most infamously, [BLEEEEEEEEEP] with the R, but I don't think it's on that level as much as people may wish it to be (which is frankly kind of weird, trying to will a slur into use). I think that dressing up as Indians should be strictly prohibited at any games involving Indian-named teams, and that teams should make real financial commitments to Indian reservations, not just throwing money at NGOs to write papers about things.

Is this a perfect solution? No, but we've had a long time to do something about this and we didn't do it, and to be quite honest, I'm tired of hoarding all these tiny little cultural victories when we're supposed to be fighting for economic victories. Remember healthcare? We wanted it? Now we're never getting it? But at least people in computer science won't use master/slave anymore and the Washington Redskins are gone. I can die with a smile on my face, and by my calculations, a lot sooner than was expected of me ten years ago.

This era will be looked on with scorn and derision by whichever generation has to fight the inevitable war against China.

I find it funny that NOBODY is talking about India and Tik Tok. Media on both sides are more focused on statues of old white men and nicknames for sports teams.

Like "Fredo."

The social victories--like are you going to live side by side with a certain group of people--matter as well, as does the arguing over symbols, but just like everywhere else it happened, it looks foolish from a distance, though it might feel good for the people doing the fighting. In retrospect, the number of fingers you use to make the sign of the cross didn't really matter to anyone anywhere, but it sure caused a lot of stupid violence.

India and China are fighting again, so India banned TikTok, which is controlled by the Chinese.

Or they fact that China and India are in an undeclared shooting war along their border. That's a bit of a bigger deal than even the stupid App For Teens by Tencent.

India has always felt like it should be more of an ally than it is, but I don't think they've ever had much interest in geopolitics, which is understandable. They've got a lot on their plate at home.

Idk they come off the bench in a big way when it's needed. They aren't really suited for Coalition of the Willing type stuff, just from a doctrinal perspective.

Now that I think about it, they can't keep the burgundy and gold and a name that starts with Red_____, can they? Otherwise, their fans, who have presumably been Redskins fans for generations, will go on using the forbidden word. Don't you have to burn it all down to the ground and start over?

God I do not want every wispy little nerd demanding the return of the Cleveland Spiders, the worst baseball team of all time, to be vindicated.

It used to be "well, the name isn't offensive, just that disgusting Chief Wahoo." So they got rid of Chief Wahoo. Now it turns out the name was bad after all. Don't let the vampire into the house.

This is how I've felt about it. These aren't victories to me. These are stale breadcrumbs. When all of this is over, future generations will laugh if the only gains made were a football team changed their name, a syrup got rebranded, a song was sang before a game, Democrats in Congress wore Kente cloth, Black Lives Matter was written on a basketball court, a street name was changed and a nearly 200 year old slave block monument was removed from the street.

I'm a stickler for letters being on caps (except the Blue Jays, it's Canada, they can be weird), so I wasn't too broken up to see Chief Wahoo go. But the name is stuck. It's been over 100 years. The team is the Cleveland Indians. Work with it as best you can.

We go through cultural shake-ups every once in a while (and, in smaller ways, whenever the next generation comes of age). On the other hand, change can be traumatic for people. It's a real issue. However, as you say, changing the names of teams seems like a pyrrhic victory.

That's the second time I've used that phrase in the last week here. Somehow, "appeasement" wasn't working. The sun has fried my brain.

It never stops. These leftists get their hands on one thing and they're already off to the next.

I vividly remember in the 00's during the gay marriage debate the evangelicals warning everyone that if you gave them gay marriage they would start indoctrinating children with transgender propaganda. Everyone laughed. They thought it was retarded. I was among them, it just seemed so far-fetched and some reality that only existed in the realm of their lunatic fantasies.

Took barely more than ten years for them to be absolutely correct. Formative realization for me back when I thought there was a point to resisting these people. So yeah, you give them the Redskins and the Indians and you think that's it but really it just moves the goalposts. The eventual goal is minority hiring quota's and that kind of draft pick incentive to not hire white people as coaches or executives that the NFL floated, and of course they'll get it. That's how this works. It starts on the lunatic fringe and works its way in.
