They're worried about maximizing the dollar values coming from FOX / CBS, and FOX and CBS need to maximize the dollar values of commercial slots for that to happen.

So, yes, they are very concerned about it.

They could hire Tributasaurus, and still have the highest rated broadcast of the year. The halftime show means nothing.

So you are saying that the NFL does not try to maximize profits?

Why don't they just pay a local unsigned band $500 to play the halftime show then?

The companies don't want to pay top dollar to advertise during halftime. (Commercial slots are charged based on when they take place in the game - the most expensive are at kickoff). In order to maximize money, the NFL needs to find a way to get viewers to watch during the Half-time show...or bring in new viewers (disinterested females). They do this with Madonna, Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, etc..

The easiest possible way for them to maximize profits would be to cut costs. I vote for unsigned band for nearly free. American Idol is one of the highest rated shows every year, and it is full of unknowns. People will watch simply because it's the Super Bowl. There's nothing else on that night.

All one can hope for is to produce a nice stool during halftime, making a little more room for delicious foodstuffs to masticate during the rest of the often pointless second half.

Which, if looked at another way, kinda gives a view on my take on life in general.

Super Bowl ratings will always be fine...for the entirety. But we're talking about the 4 hours of pomp and circumstance being cut up into 30 second bits that need to have dollar values attached to them. The NFL has to try to convince Coca Cola that they should spend millions of dollars for a 30 second spot that most people might be outside smoking for, or in the pisser for. And they do that by saying "No! People are still at the TV for this Half-time commercial! Because Beyonce!"

I agree. The women that are typically in the room when I'm watching only pay attention during halftime and some of the commercials.

Absolutely.

This will make the 5th straight Super Bowl I will not watch unless the Bears can make it there.

It's the Super Bowl halftime show? Does it really matter? I'm usually dropping a massive shit at half time in attempts to squeeze in more grub during half two.

I mentioned in an earlier post that starting with the Rolling Stones in Detroit at Super Bowl XL in 2005, the NFL had a trend with classic rockers performing live at halftime of Super Bowl Sunday. It turns out, the Stones weren't the first of a series of aging rockers performing live at halftime. Paul McCartney actually started the trend at Super Bowl XXXIX.

Needless to say, Beyonce is the youngest halftime performer in a long time. In fact, check out the following acts of recent Super Bowl performers and their respective ages. You'll feel as old as I am...

Super Bowl XXXIX: Paul McCartney (62)
Super Bowl XL: The Rolling Stones-Lead Singer Mick Jagger (62)
Super Bowl XLI: Prince (48)
Super Bowl XLII: Tom Petty (57)
Super Bowl XLIII: Bruce Springsteen (59)
Super Bowl XLIV: The Who-Pete Townshend (64)
Super Bowl XLV: The Black Eyed Peas-Fergie (35)
Super Bowl XLVI: Madonna (53)
Super Bowl XLVII: Beyonce (31)

I know you've mentioned this before but I think it's just insane not to watch the Superbowl. I get you don't like the hype and the hoopla surrounding the event but to not watch it at all just seems strange to me. To each his I suppose.

The game is way too long. The two week layover from conference championship weekend (which I love) is just ridiculous. By the time we actually get to the game, I have no desire to even watch it. You are also bombarded by every single person giving their ideas (many who don't even watch football) on who is going to win the game, and why.

I understand that there is way too much hype surrounding the game, but the last few years the games themselves are pretty good. Just give yourself a two week break from listening to sports talk on the radio and you'll be fine.

That is a valid point, Chris. For a long period of time, Super Bowls had been nothing but Super Blowouts. That hasn't been the case in recent years.

it's been the best era as far as competition for the game; it's the worst when it comes to the halftime show.

but as RSGIII said, who cares about the halftime show? that's break time.

There is no right or wrong answer to the SuperBowl halftime show question. No matter the act, there will always be multitudes of people complaining about it in various forums.

And SHARK, you need to understand that of the millions and millions of casual fans who care about the halftime show, not all of them are going to like the same music you do. Or I, or anyone else for that matter.

Will you and the girl be watching the Super Bowl at The Tyra Estates? You bring the drinks, I'll provide the SHARKs chicken. (They just opened another on 25th and St. Charles in Bellwood.)

I'd love to come by and watch with y'all but I'm not sure what the plan is since the Super Bowl is on her birthday. I know they do the family thing on birthdays, but if it's early enough in the day we'll probably swing through later for the game.
