Watched A Football Life on him tonight. I was not old enough to watch him play during his day. I have always heard about him and their defense and saw a few highlights here and there. But I did not realize how dominant this guy was during his time. So I am asking you older dudes who watched him and have a better appreciation for what he did, is he the best DT to ever play the game? |

I did not realize also that Greene was a scout for Pitts for several years and was involved in all 6 of the superbowl wins. Also, how crazy is it that 2 of the 4 lineman that made up the Steel Curtain died from complications following back surgery? |

I would say him and Allen Page in the seventies were very underrated. |

Playing high school football in the late 70's & early 80's, our D-Line coaches told us to watch four guys playing very closely; Alan Page, Lyle Alzado, Randy White & Joe Greene. This was pre 1985 Bears so none of those guys were dominant - yet. I saw that Joe Greene episode - it's very good. Best ever? Not sure but definitely one of the best. Top 5?... sure. |

I am not sure if it was mentioned in the show as it may have been made prior. Joe Greene is the only Steeler with his number retired. The only one, no others. And that only happened last year I think? |

Sorry,I will choose Jim Osbourne and Mike Hartenstine as two of the most underrated DL's of all-time! From the Bears website(http://beargoggleson.com/2014/07/27/chi ... m-osborne/):Number 42 in our Top 100 Chicago Bears countdown is defensive tackle Jim Osborne. Osborne was a 7th round selection of the Bears in the 1972 draft out of Southern University. The 6-3 250 was one of the most disruptive defensive tackles in team history. Even though the NFL did not record the sack statistic until 1982, Osborne ranks fourth on the team’s sack list with 81 (unofficial) sacks including a 15 sack season in 1976.Osborne appeared in 186 games across his 13 seasons, all with the Chicago Bears. That’s good to rank tied for 6th on the all time list of most games played as a Chicago Bear. Osborne retired after the 1984 season, one season before the magical Super Bowl season in 1985. I have to mention Hartenstine who had a nice career with the Bears simply for the hardest hit I have ever seen on a football field! Right in the beginning of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QED1UrfW5Y Next up in our countdown of the Top 100 Chicago Bears is #82 and that honor goes to defensive end Mike Hartenstine. Hartenstine was selected with the 31st overall selection of the 1975 NFL Draft out of Penn State. He stepped in as an immediate starter, starting all 14 games. Back then, they didn’t collect stats on tackles and sacks, but Hartenstine was a force to be reckoned with. He played in 179 games with the Chicago Bears, then a team record, over his 12 year career. By the time the Bears boasted an all-world defense in the mid-80’s, Hartenstine was an aging veteran who gave way to younger talents like Dan Hampton, Richard Dent and Steve McMichael. |

I always felt that Page was the best of that era, although ranking Page over Greene is like ranking Gibson over Jenkins. Today, Page would be a strong safety. Which would be scary as hell. |

The lack of respect for Gilbert Brown in this thread is disheartening. |

How do you even think you can measure page slower than randle? Reaganomics? John Randle was the fastest playing tackle I've ever seen. And quickest, by far. Just because I think your hero was an enabler of the worst kind doesn't mean that I can't judge speed and quickness ![]() |
