Football is the exception. I don't think the same thing is necessarily true for baseball or basketball.

What rules are you going to use? If you are playing by today's rules where you can't breathe on a QB or touch a WR, the 2019 Dolphins win.

If you are playing with the '72 rules where you can actually hit and tackle, then the '72 team wins.

Old school rules would ensure the 72 team has no QB by halftime, it be like Alabama vs Marist.

This is true in all sports, with it being the closest in MLB.

I don't think it's true in basketball. Many of the guys from 40 years ago were in phenomenal shape. You had a guy like Wilt taking a beating and still playing damn near 48 minutes every night.

Pitchers arms didn't fall off if you looked at them.

Even the black guys on the 72 Dolphins were slow, tiny , and white

Yup. The bench guys today are way better than the bench guys back then but for the most part the best players back then would be stars today also.

In the very narrow example of just dropping a team in a time machine he is probably correct. If the 72 Dolphins had the same weight training, technology and drugs as the 2019 Dolphins they win.

It's kind of a flawed argument on both sides. The major reason why the 72 team would be crushed was because they weren't full time professional athletes. They just spent far less time in their lives preparing for the job of NFL player.

In terms of natural ability they started off in roughly the same spot. Training and time spent by youth in sports also has greatly increased though that is likely a less impactful part of it.

If you made all NFL players work full time jobs in the offseason you would see the quality of player decrease.

That's a trashy story.

The '72 Dolphins would crush the '19 Dolphins. You have to remember in '72 they weren't pussies and actually had 2-a-days and played in the preseason. The boys from '72 would be ready to ball out from kickoff

Every time these debates are brought up I always assume the time machine scenario.
