With the Patriots leading 33-0 in the fourth quarter on Monday night, they took a delay of game penalty with their punt team on the field. After the Jets declined the penalty, the clock started again, and the Patriots’ punt team waited until they were about to get another delay of game, then false started. The Jets declined the false start penalty, too, the clock started again, and then the Patriots finally punted.

When the Patriots’ third-down play ended, 11:05 remained in the fourth quarter. By the time the Patriots actually punted on fourth down, 9:43 remained. The whole point of the play clock is that teams can’t take more than 40 seconds between plays, but the Patriots, thanks to that running clock after their penalties, took 1 minute, 22 seconds.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was shown on television smirking on the sideline after that series of penalties, and he acknowledged after the game that the penalties allowed him to take plenty of extra time off the clock. He added that league rules probably shouldn’t allow that.

“No, it was just the way the rules are set up. We were able to run quite a bit of time off the clock without really having to do anything. That’s probably a loophole that will be closed and probably should be closed but right now it’s open,” Belichick said.

The Patriots were so far ahead in the fourth quarter that it really didn’t matter, but Belichick is right that this loophole should be closed. Teams shouldn’t be able to take more than 40 seconds off the clock between plays. Perhaps this is a rule Belichick wants to see changed, and he was waiting until just the right time to demonstrate that it needs to change.

There is nothing wrong with the rule. Why would you want to stop the clock in a shit show of a game. ?

It’s smart to know the rule, but it was dumb to waste showing it when he’s up 33 in the 4th. Save that for when it might matter. One of my “problems” with the NFL is they look for any excuse to run the clock, compared to college

That it was pulled out in an inconsequential blowout game just speaks volumes as to far ahead he is of the rest of football. It really puts the rest of the league on notice.that he has untold other tricks and rules her can exploit since he can so freely play this card now.

Iirc, the tv guys were so distracted by his smirk and emotional explosion, they didn't even notice the clock for awhile.

The broadcast conversations around how he coaches his team up on the tendencies of the specific referee team working the game were quite fascinating. The guy doesn’t miss anything. I can’t hate the Patriots because I respect the hell out of what they do in a parity league.

He doesn't care what type of game. He just is willing to do whatever can be found in the gray area of the rules whenever he wants. Can't say I blame him but there usually is a self governed ethic in a competitor to not do things like that just because you can.

Take them out of the AFC East and I think we genuflect to them less. The division has been shit for over a decade.

They've been in the AFC title game for about 15 of the last 20 years and they have 9 Super Bowl appearances. At some point you stop looking for reasons to diminish their success.

We can dismiss it all we want. It’s just football. If Spygate goes differently, if Deflategate mattered, if mugging the Colts receivers was actually called, if Aaron Hernandez killed T*m Br*dy instead... any of those things could have changed the dynasty. Winning doesn’t trump cheating (in sports) for some people, even if it’s not strictly cheating.

Yeah! Put the Pats in the division where the juggernauts that are the Browns and Bengals play! Or, move them out west where Tim Tebow won a playoff game with an 8-8 record, and the Raiders who have won all of 30 games this decade. That will show 'em!

Their winning percentage is the same against the AFC East and the rest of the NFL since 2003. This is a lazy take.

They get 4 guaranteed wins every year. The only games that ever give them trouble are sometimes at Buffalo and at Miami before this year. It certainly factors some.

I’m glad I don’t hate the Pats like so many other people do. I’m usually the only one cheering for them at Super Bowl parties and so on. I love their dominance and professional cut throat take no prisoners put your foot on their neck approach to literally everything they do. It’s how I want the teams I cheer for to be run, it’s how I wish they were run.

Wouldn't that be awesome?

We have a Coach who keeps saying "I know we need to run the ball" and then goes out and sets a team record for fewest rushes in a game.

Yep, talk is cheap. If he can't keep track of what he's running, he needs to recuse himself from play calling or hire someone to follow him around and poke him with a stick.

perhaps Nagy doesn't realize all the running plays are on the other side of that Denny's menu he holds up during the game...

How long could NE have kept up this rule-following? Would another false start have started the clock again, or is two the limit? Why not another delay of game? I'm not sure, but I suppose the opponent would just accept the penalty at some point, or does the clock restart then, also? perhaps the NFL has it right and the only time the rules work this way is against a team of morons like the Jets.
