Outside of this Mac Jones pick, Belichick has absolutely sucked drafting players. He clearly doesn't have an eye for that. He is able to identify cheap quality NFL players and he buys low. Getting a franchise quarterback appears to be the most important step in the process.

I'd say it is incredibly important to stockpile mid-round picks to build the unsexy portion of your roster.

Get all your big uglies and fill in skill positions with the 1-2 round picks for QB/WR/CB and maybe LT.

I think you can get solid edge rushers and LB play in the mid-rounds.

There's always going to be a crazy good talent as a pass rusher at the top of the draft but 1 guy like that isn't going to win you a title. What has JJ Watt won?

Dan Hampton didn't win until they loaded up guys all around him and they weren't top picks.

Important enough that it gets higher TV ratings than the NBA.

Id say he is the best coach and best GM in nfl history, he must be deafting well.. he also hasnt had the luxury of drafting in the top 5 or top 10..hes consistently picking 30th or later.

His drafts have absolutely sucked. We would skin Pace if his draft record was as bad. Early round position doesn't change that. Belichick had had success in free agency and buying low in trades and Brady pushed things over the top.

This is a weird year to say BB sucks at drafting considering how good Mac, Barmore, and Stevenson have looked.

Good thing we have more than just 10 games to judge his drafting.

Reports were that he finally left the April draft to his college scouting department.

I'm pretty sure Mac was his pick because of his relationship with Saban. If what you say is true then the Patriots should be back on top very soon. He definitely knows how to scout NFL players.

Nas, other than BB, do you have another example of a coach/GM that is just great at getting talent off the scrap heap and winning titles?

Is this an easily replicated process?

Because BB hasn't won anything without Brady. And Brady has.

Agreed on Mac because of his relationship with St. Nick.

I'm sure teams have had short term success building through free agency and trades, however, there isn't a coach or GM that has the cachet that Belichick has earned. To your point, no one has had a Tom Brady on their team to help them survive draft errors.

Belichick’s success at identifying bargain NFL players leads me to believe that there is a method to his madness. I'm just surprised some team or super computer hasn't figured it out.

It happens in the NBA, but the success isn't sustainable

Bart Starr

Vince Evans

Troy Aikman

My point is that Nas might be right about BB. But, BB is also probably a unicorn.

And, even as a unicorn, still had to get that 1 right guy.

Actually Jimmy Johnson is my point.

Herschel Walker won those Super Bowls. They loaded up on draft picks and won.

From 1969-1990 Washington had 3 first round picks total and did pretty well, going 2-2 in the Super Bowl.

Lets give Bill more than 1 season with a covid infected washed up Cam Newton to try imo. Seems to be doing well this year with a rookie QB that was the 5th one taken this past draft. And with a WR1 who would probably be WR5 on TB

Bobby Beathard was a great GM. But Joe Gibbs WAS a greater coach. On par with Johnson, Belicheck and Lombardi.

And Al.

The draft is crazy important if you would choose for your team to have any depth. I will also add the street free agents that are added, getting those guys signed that went undrafted is huge.

So Nas is using the success of Tom Brady and Bill Belicheck to prove that the draft isn't that important?

I guess all the Bears need to do is find the greatest QB in NFL history in the sixth round of the draft, pair him with an all-time great coach, and then they'll be all set. Easy stuff.

This thinking is more than a little reminiscent of a guy who vows to drive only after downing a couple bottles of vodka because he once got into a car accident while driving sober.

There are 52 other players on the team. Megamind and Brady didn't win alone.

We've been told that the only way that you can win or have sustained success is by drafting well. The experts have said that trying to build your team in free agency or trades is a recipe for disaster. Well, the Patriots haven't drafted well. They've built a sustained winner through free agency and trading for malcontents. They've even managed to win a bunch of games when Tom Terrific wasn't on the field.

We live in a sports world where everyone copies whatever is successful. Yet, no one has tried to copy Belichick’s bargain shopping approach to free agency and trades. The most successful organization in the 21st century sustained success by essentially going against conventional wisdom. Is it really that ridiculous to wonder if conventional wisdom is correct?

Maybe you're just a Peter Plateau kinda guy. That's okay. I'm not exactly a cookie cutter kinda guy, but I still respect you even though that's your thing.

so what's your question.

Of course the draft is important.

Otherwise there wouldn't be one.
