In the second half of a game, is there any reason to take any time outs expect to conserve time on the clock? Is a 5 yard penalty really worse than losing 40 seconds of the clock at the end of the game?

If I were a head coach I would tell my team we are never using a timeout until the final minutes of a game to conserve clock. If you need to complete a 2nd and 15 instead of a 2nd and 10 then that's your job.

The timeout saved 1 second and 5 yards. There was 60 seconds left when the Rams got the back. The people making a big deal about the timeout are wrong. They hypothetical of Stafford throwing a 90 yard touchdown pass and you needing the extra timeout is ridiculous.

So you want to go for a 4th and 1 with 8:00 to go and you get a look you don’t like, you just taking 5 yards?

I definitely think teams should do everything they can to keep all their timeouts for the end of the game. But I dont think you can make a black and white rule about it. I think they are potential situations in the 4th quarter where you would use one. It may also depend on when do you think the end of the game starts? At what time in the 4th quarter can you start to use one? Mid way through the 4th quarter, 3 & 1 on a drive to put the game away. Time clock running out. Take one because 3rd & 1 is way better than 3rd & 6

But in general I agree with you. Especially in the 3rd quarter a TO should never be used.

No. Call a time out. End of thread

What kind of look wouldn't you like on 4th and 1? There isn't really a good defense against 4th and 1 in the NFL. Just run the play or have a play you can audible to.

You also get 4 timeouts.

Call the Waldron Special.

I've mentioned it before, and it seems so obvious that I'd think someone's already doing it, but hire some math nerd from some local university who loves sports and have him figure out all the clock stuff. It would be similar to when the TV broadcast puts up the graphic on the 4th down saying statistically if its better to go for it or punt. The biggest things though is to stop throwing 3 yard passes in the middle of the field in a two minute drill and tell people to run for the god damn sidelines (but be going forward so the clock stops) instead of fighting for extra yards.

Play clock running down, you don’t have time. Defense does a late check.

The Rams probably had less than a 5% chance of winning that game on the road.

Eberflus' original declining the OPI penalty against the Rams was far more egregious than his calling an unnecessary timeout.

That's a legitimate criticism. No one should have to call down for that.
