after a regular season of this axiom being abused by the league, we now have three of the final four teams whose identity is more based on their defense than offense

What if the Patriots win?

I know some will point out that both the 49ers and Giants put up 30+ to win but that is certainly not how the niners have done it this year and I think the Giants resurgence has been based in D.

some would probably say it further dispels the theory. I think 3 of 4 indicates otherwise. That's why I say discuss.

i know a certain team that LOST a championship today, moreso than the other 3 teams this weekend.... i wonder who that could be? =D

Exactly.
Even in this era of high flying offense that is pass oriented, the team with the best offense & the worst defense in the NFL, (Packers), lost to the team that is playing the best defense right now (Giants)...& the team with the 2nd best offense (Saints), lost to the team with the best defense (Niners). When it mattered, the better defense won.

I think you hit the nail on the head at the beginning of this post. The 49ers and Giants had to score big to win, and the Ravens(only team that didn't score big) was facing a 3rd string rookie. Offense wins championships these days. If the 49ers beat the Ravens 9-3 in the Super Bowl then I'll bump this and say I'm wrong.

But the teams with the better offenses lost 3 of the 3 playoff games this weekend.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

They didn't win because of their defense.

No.. They won 3 of the 4 playoff games this weekend. And the 49ers NEEDED 36 points to beat the Saints. Hardly defense.

Giants allowed 388 yards of offense. Packers allowed 420.
San Fransisco allowed 472. Saints allowed 407.
Baltimore had a good day allowing 315. Houston allowed 227.

So Houston had the best defense of those games.

No one actually believes that the Texans defense is better than the Ravens, & they weren't today.

The Packers averaged 35 points per game during the season...the Giants held them to 20 points today.

The Niners defense forced 5 turnovers & set the tone for the game in the first half against the Saints by playing aggressively & pressuring Brees.

And lets not forget that the fact that the Packers & Saints don't play defense.

Agreed. But no team that won this weekend did so because of their defense. Except Baltimore.

Yes they were. The Texans defense played fantastic. Foster ran all over the Ravens and Baltimore relied on turnovers from a 3rd string rookie QB and a punt returner to win the game.

TOs were the difference in this one and the Giants-Packers game.
The Niners did force a lot of turnovers, but their defense also gave up two long scores in the final four minutes. SF's offense bailed them out.

Im glad you understand how flawed your position is.

The 49ers defense let up two scoring drives in 3 minutes til theyre offense bailed them out.

The only team that won with running and defense is the Ravens and they will be dismissed this sunday

Seriously, this is irresponsible message boarding. Defenses DO NOT win championships.

The Giants resurgence would not be taking place without a historically great season from their QB and WR's

i think the texans defense is very good and might give them the edge over the ravens who are old but still good

I think you may be right though you never know which version of each team is going to show up for each game. The Ravens have looked real good at times and then I remember watching them play the Jags on MNF.

i just don't think flacco can have a big game against a shitty defense..that game was close yesterday even with the 3 picks from yates...i thought flacco was going to be better than he is, he is pretty much the same guy he was 4 years ago in his rookie year. the ravens wideouts are bad they get no separation.

The Giants scored a chunk of those points because the defense took the ball away.

2 teams lost because of their defense, GB and NO.

They gave up 36.5 points to mediocre-to-average offenses in playoff games. I guarantee you that the SF-NY game this weekend won't be a 37-36 shootout. When you play Loyola Marymount, you're going to score a lot of points. Trying to play video game football is still not the recipe. You can get by with an average defense and great offense, maybe, although NO didn't. But, you can't have a bad defense and plan to outscore people.

NE will look much more beatable this week against a team that can defend the middle of the field. They may still win at home but I like Baltimore +7.5 for sure.

Counter argument:

SF caused 5 turnovers
Giants were leading by double digits most of the second half. There was a lot of garbage time in the 4th quarter
Baltimore caused 3 turnovers and clearly did not win because of offense

Lovie would get hired as HC again in a heartbeat.

He's made quite a career as a head coach that treats the offensive side of the ball as a low-priority afterthought and/or a nuisance.
