RT @DanWetzel: NFL will play a Thursday Night game the first 16 weeks next season.

This sucks.

No way. Love it. Gimme any matchup - don't care if it's the worst two team in the league. Just give me more.

:(
Makes me sad. Won't be able to watch any of those next season. Maybe the 2013 season, if we're not all dead.

I don't like the short week then long week. It screws teams up.

Wait - so are they doing away with the traditional Thursday night season opener with the defending champs?
(GB/NO last year, NE/Baltimore next year?)

This starts week 2. I would imagine Week 1 still has the national TV Thursday opener.

So they are showing Thursday Night Football starting week 1.

That's a good question. I caught that as well, but I haven't seen anything. Wetzel's thing said week 2.

Probably, but Week 1 won't be the NFL Network shit-fest. Doesn't NBC broadcast the Thursday season-opener?

Yeah.

Did you guys catch that I already stated who will be playing in week #1? It's basically a lock. It's gonna happen.

Forget Thursdays. I'd rather a Friday or Saturday night primetime game.

Pretty much, I wish it would just be the Opener and Thanksgiving on Thursday and that's it.

Doing it more, to help get the NFL Network everywhere, instead of just a couple of places.

I would say NBC has the opener still, because on NFL network, they says it's 13 games.

Looks like NFL network Thursday games are Week 2-15.

As long as the Bears are not on during TNF's (except for the opener), I am good.

I'm guessing that this means that every team will play a Thursday night game...

Nah, they will save Thursday nights for the Jaguars and Chiefs, and Buccaneers of the world.

No NFL Network Thursday night game on Thanksgiving either. My guess is that NBC or ESPN gets that one.

NBC Sports DEFINITELY has the Thanksgiving night game starting this fall, Rick. This was the game that was on NFL Network the last 3 years after the games involving the Lions & Cowboys alternating between FOX & CBS respectively aired Thanksgiving afternoon.

As for NFLN and the rest of the "Thursday Night Football" package, I know that they've had the final 8 weeks from November to the end of the regular season and the matchups have usually involved teams very much in the playoff hunt. That said, it's not a sure thing that NFL Network will have these other guys excluding the Thanksgiving Night game. I've got to think other networks such as TNT, FX & the new NBC Sports Network are among the possible destinations for these other "TNF" matchups in addition to NFLN, which is still NOT in as many homes as the networks I mentioned above.

I much prefer college football on Thursday nights. I think this waters down the pro product.

Exactly...the good (or popular) teams will get the Sunday nights and some of the Monday nights, the bad (and/or unpopular) teams will get the Thursday night games.

In other words, more Blaine Gabbert/Jacksonville Jaguar, Carson Palmer/Oakland Raider and maybe Colt McCoy/Cleveland Brown games on "Thursday Night Football"? No thank you!

I cannot recall the last time the Bears hosted a Thursday night game. I fear our time is near.

As a STH I hate night home games.

I'm a little bit surprised by this announcement primarily because of that. They've always stayed out of college football's way on Saturdays until college games were over, and colleges (at least the decent ones at football) have been staying away from Sunday or Monday nights. Maybe now that we have literally one thousand different channels of TV to watch at any given time, it isn't as much of an issue as it would have been twenty or thirty years ago (or more.) It would be interesting to see the effect on viewership of the late college Thursday night schedule once the NFL Network started airing games -- if the ESPN numbers have remained semi constant, I guess they would be OK with this.
The other thing playing on Thursday night does is open up the chances for some varying amounts of rest in the schedule. One "advantage" in this, is that you could send a team off of a Thursday night home game to go play the London Rozelles or the Berlin Bobcats if they end up expanding into Europe.

Thursday night is for watching MAC football. I think I watched the MAC or ACC or Conference USA or whatever the hell college game was on over the NFL Thursday night game this year every time.
