For frontloading contracts.

Cowboys - $10M
Redskins - $36M

Money to be distributed to the other teams somehow.

From the little that I just watched/read, this was a violation of "cap rules"...

...so...

...if there wasn't a cap that year, why would said rules still exist?

Not that I'm complaining about either team getting docked...just wondering if they knew what they were doing was punishable in such a form.

I heard each owner was informed approximately six times, in formal meetings, that teams "abusing" the uncapped season would be subject to these consequences in the future. Lil' Danny S and JJ obviously did not follow the rules. I wonder why I root for this franchise sometimes. The shit never stops.

It's not that simple. Redskins are fighting it. They really got screwed... especially on the timing.

That's just what I heard. Hope you're right. Working 60+ hours a week this time of year does not leave me much time to follow the NFL closely.

The biggest things in the Skins favor, are the fact that the NFL, specifically the Commissioner's office, approved the deals in question. And further, while there may have been verbal warnings, this wasn't specifically written in the CBA apparently. That brings in to question it's validity, IMO.
