Ban football for kids?

Post subject:  Ban football for kids?
I know we've gone over this before, but this year it really seems to be a big story. The NFL is terrified of this and that explains those bad commercials about how football is safe that replaced the bad commercials telling fat kids to not be so fat and go outside for 60 minutes.

So, three questions.
1) Did you play football in high school. If not, why didn't you?
2) Would you let your spawn play it?
3) Should it be banned to protect kids who don't really understand the risks?

For me:
1) No, my parents told me no, but primarily because I was better at basketball and they "didn't want me to mess up my knees".
2) No. Not a chance.
3) No. A parent still has the right to choose.

1) No, I played other sports.
2) If they wanted to, I would let them, but I would not encourage it.
3) No, more than likely kids today will kill most of their brain cells doing drugs or getting drunk or watching tv, so they might as well speed up the process by running into each other at high speeds.

1) No. Never really even considered football as a youth. Played soccer then Lacrosse and Hockey in high school
2) Not a chance in hell
3) Of course. Parents should still choose.

1. No. I was more interested in running track. (Plus my school's team blew)
2. I haven't up to this point, but my 12 yr. old wants to play next year....so we'll see then.
3. I wouldn't ban it, but when I hear stories of teams playing two games in a single weekend and
hitting 3-4x a week in practice, I start to see that position "evolve".

1--No, too fat, slow and weak.
2--I told my wife he can but not until middle school.

1.) No. Played up until HS then just played basketball
2.) Yes I think I'd let my kids play football but I might feel differently once I actually have kids.

1. yep was a ok WR. Better at B.Ball and Baseball tho.
2. Neither wanted to both were swimmers but would have let them if they wanted.
3. As is everything these days, football may be the sport that really teaches winning and losing
cause you just can't trot a kid out there to "participate" so I think it should stay.

1. Flag 1st-4th, Tackle 5th through High School
2. If they want to.
3. No. If they are going to ban football then they should ban soccer to. Most of our schools injuries come from soccer in the form of concussions and torn knee ligaments.

Same on all three. I never had interest in football in high school. I was a basketball/baseball guy.

My son plays flag football at the Y, but his mother and I have already decided that he will never play tackle football. Ever.

And no, it shouldn't be banned. Leave it to parents' discretion. Not all parents feel the way I do about it.

Banned? Sorta. The current game of football shouldn't be played by kids.

Why let him play flag football if you know he cant continue on with it? What if he falls in love with it?

He knows that's as far as he's going with football and he's okay with that. It's not his favorite sport. He just likes the running around aspect.

Soccer and basketball are his sports.

no- marginal skill, hate "tough guy" coaches players etc.
no way
school administrators should ban it if they had any stones. maybe they should have glue-sniffing class too. shouldn't be banned by law.

Just ban all sports. Cant have kids getting hurt, in any type of way. I wouldn't even let mine go play tag in the front yard, could trip and smash their face into the sidewalk.

Does anyone realize the number of kids who play youth & High School football in this country compared to the number of serious injuries? 6.6 million kids between the age of 8 & 18 play football. There were about 200,000 injuries that required emergency medical attention. Football at the youth level & to a lesser degree High School is no where near as violent as what we see on Sundays in the NFL. Serious injuries are rare.
Both of my Sons played football for a total of about 15 years, & I coached for about 8 years. I can think of just 3 injuries with my Boys, none of which were serious, & I can remember 1 or 2 serious injuries on all of the teams that my Sons played on but both players played football again.
My Daughter was on a competitive travel cheerleading team & she had more injuries than I can count...wrist, ankle, arm, leg, etc...
Were does it end if football is banned? At what point does freedom & personal choice & responsibility not matter?

You do realize that the concerns for youth football aren't injuries like broken bones or knee problems or etc.., right? The brain problems might not show up for years. It isn't as simple as just icing it and going out there next weekend.

Serious injuries can happen in nearly all sports. Maybe we should ban every sports where injuries occur? Serious injuries can also happen while driving a car or crossing the street. Maybe we should ban cars & crosswalks.

1) no i didn't, too small and parents wouldn't let me
2) yes. i have let my son play jr. tackle in 4th and 5th grade. he hasnt played in 6th because he prefers basketball.
3) no!

i did make him drop out of the computer club because of the possibility of dangerous eltro-magnetic rays giving him some yet-undetected form of cancer. you cant be too careful these days.

1) No. I was much better at baseball. Then again, I wouldn't know if I would have been good at football as I never played.
2) I would prefer them not to, but my parents never forced me to do anything. I'll do the same for my kids.

But the point is with football, moreso than any other sport, the mundane actions of the game can lead to brain damage all the time. You don't need a concussion to have long term cognitive consequences.

1. No to small to play where I went to school, but played thru Junior High
2. Yes, he has played the last 3 years in 6th,7th and 8th grade. He absolutely loves it, but baseball is his favorite.
3. No, it should not be banned. I have coached for 6 years and have never seen really a vicious hit. Kids get hurt sure, but kids get hurt falling off bicycles too. Maybe we should just build bubbles for each of them, that way there are no injuries.
