With all the rule changes, how does a coach teach tackling? A lot of free-wheeling offenses and lesser athletes on defense make the NFL into a pinball machine with teams marching up and down the field. You can say it has evolved but I'm having a tough time seperating the lucky from the good (not just the Bears)

That's what I like about Chip Kelly coaching in the NFL. When you play football on a video game you don't let the play clock run down. You call your play and get your guys up to the line in like 10 seconds and snap the ball. Football would so much more fun with a shorter play clock.

I like sports where scoring is at a premium, not stops. The NFL is not there yet, and I hope they don't get there.

Ha! A reasonable premium, not a "slit my wrists" premium.

Seems like the NBA wants to move this way, too. I can enjoy high and low scoring games as long as they happen due to talent, and not incompetence.

For example, I would enjoy a SF-Seattle game that's 3-3 with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but I'd hate a 40-37 Saints-Falcons game because it's more than likely that sucky defense is the cause of the high scoring, as opposed to brilliant offense against an equally brilliant defense. The same reasoning would apply to a 7-7 game between the Jags and the Jets - just bad all around, as opposed to a 7-7 game between the Texans and Patriots. The same for the NBA.

Not much is worse in the sports world than a 1-0 hockey game where a team scores early and then goes in a shell for 45+ minutes and you wind up with either 46 shots on goal from the losing team or 16 shots on goal and a billion that didn't even get through the shell. The NHL's solution to teams keeping five skaters back and not letting anything through? Shrink the goalie pads.

After last nights Denver/Dallas fiasco,I am wondering if this is what the league wants. Whatever THAT was last night,it wasn't NFL football!

Over the coarse of NFL history, per-game scoring actually hasn't fluctuated all that much. the 70's were pretty low-scoring, but generally speaking teams score in the 20-23 range per game on average. It is definitely trending higher now for sure, but it isn't at all-time highs yet, teams aren't all of a sudden scoring 10 or more points per game. each era has its "high-flying" offenses that put up a ton of points, and horse shit teams that can't score to offset it.

what i dont like are some of the rule changes that are making it absurdly easy for a quarterback to get away with throwing the ball away with no ramifications other than loss of down. the perfectly legal intentional grounding in situations where the quarterback has given ground 15-20 yards, sees good coverage and is being pursued and simply throws the ball 30 yards out of bounds is totally unfair to a good defense. i understand protecting the QB and the rules prohibiting blows to the head and all that, but with rules like that in place scoring can't help but increase and there is no way for a defense to counter that.

eli manning got called for 3 intentional groundings yesterday, i didn't think it was even possible to get three of those called in a season, let alone a game! these days there is no excuse for getting an intentional grounding.

How can you still get called for intentional grounding??

The problem I had was the pass interference and holding calls on the Jets last night. They didn't call that in the Super Bowl, so why should they call that in the regular season? I noticed that the referee crew was the one that makes a lot of mistakes.

I think the NFL does want more scoring. I think they call pass interference much more closely than they did years ago. The way they call the game also contributes to teams being able to pick up first downs on ridiculous penalties.

In terms of injuries if the NFL wanted to stop some of them they shouldn't allow players to dive on sliding quarterbacks or hit players that are clearly going out of bounds.

I never understood why the QB spike into the ground isn't intentional grounding. The QB is literally intentionally throwing the ball in the ground.

You have to be pressured for intentional grounding and be attempting to avoid a sack.

The defense is probably less than a couple feet away from him, I would call that pressured.

He is not in danger of being sacked. If the defense was able to get between the offensive lineman and the quarterback it would be intentional grounding.

THIS!

I just wanted to bump this thread because even though it's fun to watch, the NFL has taken 2 steps back with this "no defense" allowed version. It kind of reminds me of Sosa vs. McGwire in MLB.

I agree Jimmy. This amount of scoring is stupid and the league needs to review it. It doesn't tell us who the better team is. It tells us who had the last possession.

In addition, a good number of these games are being decided on subjective P.I. calls made by blind old men. When a coach's best strategy for a comeback is to throw a bomb and hope for a flag , it might be time to review some things.

I really think that the PI calls are the thing ruining games for me. I don't feel they should be called as ticky tacky.
