Last night's game rekindled an old argument I've had with a buddy on numerous occasions. I will keep it short. Your team is down 18 points with, let's say, six minutes left in the game. You score a touchdown. Do you kick the point or go for two? You still have all three time outs.

18 points requires three scores either way. I say you take the sure points as it still keeps it within three scores even if the other team happens to kick a field goal.

I wonder if we'll ever see an NFL coach who will go for the 2 all the time unless his team needs the extra point to tie or win.

The 2012 Pats seemed ideal with Hernandez, Gronk, and Welker, plus an effective Ridley at RB. With two massive targets at TE, a reliable WR who knows where to be, and the threat of Ridley, I could see Brady engineering multiple two point conversions within a single game.

There is no other option at this point. You kick the extra point to get to within 11.
If you happen to score again, then you go for two at that point to get within a FG.

Before I ridicule you and destroy that tiny amount of credibility you hang on to - tell me which side of the argument you were on?

only go for two if you have to late in the game to get within one score of the lead. that situation is way to early in my opinion. not making it can compound your problem prematurely.

I'd like to see this and a coach who doesnt punt except if extremely backed up in their own territory. The game gives you 4 downs to get 10 yds. Start gameplanning for it.

The correct and only answer is go for two.

fan reaction after the game would be hilarious if a team lost 20-18 on a last second field goal because they unnecessarily went for 2 all day based on that philosophy and were unsuccessful three times.

Have to change your thinking sometimes. Sure that might happen one game but you might also win games because of it too. If you score first and successfully go for 2, now you have put a big decision on the opposing coach. Does he just go with the status quo or have you made him adjust to your gameplan?

Defense is nothing now, the league is becoming offense based. The next coach to think outside the box on punting and two point conversions is going to be looked at like Bill Walsh and Bill Belichek.

that's true, hank. and that's why you see so many teams go for it on 4th down, too. 2 point conversions are still pretty tricky but i think it's only really a gamble when you don't trust your offense. aggressive coaches like payton and belichick are going to do it a lot more than most, because they have the weapons to pull it off.

in redskingreg's situation, i don't think it's necessary to go for 2 at that point in the game though. even if you want to put pressure on the other coach...it doesn't really need to be done.

I'd prefer a team that never punts unless it's like 4th and 27. You'd think somebody would be nuts enough to try it... but the NFL is really conservative and coaches hate to be second-guessed...

Going for two is the correct move.
