Cheap effective QB's Russel Wilson 600K Colin Kaepernick 800K Andrew Luck 5 M Cam Newton 5 M Andy Dalton 850K It leaves you so much money to build the rest of the team. Its not that you cant win with highly paid QB's at all, but I think this is the best strategy. The Mannings, Rodgers, Romo and Stafford all make 15 million or more. Even at such an important position, I think there is a certain percentage you should stay under |

I'm sure you realize that pretty much everyone on that list except for maybe Dalton is going to make 15 million or more sooner rather than later. What do you do then? Trade them and start over with a rookie QB? For the argument to be consistently valid you'd have to find stud QBs in the draft, use them for the duration of their rookie contract, then trade them or let them walk so you can draft another rookie. |

The worst thing you can have is an expensive average quarterback.veganfan21 wrote: For the argument to be consistently valid you'd have to find stud QBs in the draft, use them for the duration of their rookie contract, then trade them or let them walk so you can draft another rookie. No. The goal is to find an elite quarterback. Of course you want to keep Drew Brees and Tom Brady. You don't want to keep Carson Palmer and Jay Cutler.

This isn't really all that different from what every team is trying to do nowadays. |

Either get rid of them or sign them to team friendly contracts like Tom Brady signed. |

Brady had already been paid and he makes all kinds of outside marketing type money and his wife pulls down 8 figures too. If you hit with one of these rooks then its great but doing it twice in a row will be a monumental task. |

Especially if they're a good team and close to winning. The important thing is you have to win when they're young. |

No, the goal is to find an elite quarterback with the hope that at worst your young quarterback will be cheaper and good enough to keep you competitive. In fact, I'd argue that the new model of the NFL is not to settle for a "good QB". It is to give up on a good quarterback as soon as you don't think they can be elite and instead enter yourself once again in the elite quarterback derby. |

Might be happening to the Ravens right now |

Might be happening to the Ravens right now On the other hand though you have the Manning-led Colts and Patriots, who've always been in contention despite QBs with hefty contracts. Since an elite QB is the most indispensable position on the team, the burden of contending falls on a team's ability to consistently draft well in other areas in order to complement the elite and expensive QB. The logic of drafting, developing, and then letting that player walk when he gets too pricey works in most other non-QB positions except for perhaps DE, DT, or LT. |

That's fine and all but the Saints and Pats are 10-3, broncos are 11-2, Packers were 5-2 when their guy went down, etc. Give me an all time great and you can have the cheap younger guy. |

Brady and Rodgers both made 5.5 when they won their last Super Bowl That was the most Brady ever made in the three years he won. We'll see what happens. |

I disagree if he is saying you should choose Russel Wilson over Aaron Rodgers at any price. If he is saying that having cheaper Russel Wilson is better than having Romo or Flacco then I agree. |

Would you rather have Rodgers or Russell Wilson right now assuming both are healthy and you get to spend the difference on other players? I dont think its crazy to say Wilson and Rodgers is probably the best QB in the league. Money is just so important, now |

I'd rather have Rodgers. |

Which is fine, but I don't think its wrong say you would rather have Wilson and ~$20million worth of cap space to make moves next year rather than Rodgers and only $5million of cap space. |

Do you then not pay him if he wins a Super Bowl, like Flacco |

He took $30 million up front just for signing. Sure, it gave the Pats some immediate cap relief but it also pays Brady $3 million more than he was scheduled to make before the re-structuring. His cap hit is between $13-$15 million for the next 5 years. Think that he'll be worth that in 2017?
