So Lovie has landed in TB, for a bad team with a bunch of younger players. Lovie needs to decide on his DC and OC. I am sure he has some in mind. My favorite part is that they dont have a GM yet. lol Bucs get better next year and the year after, year 3 & 4 they contend for a wildcard, everyone sees the organization on the upswing, but still not top 10. They will exercise the option for year 5 new GM will fight with Loovie in Power Struggle, then give him a 3 years deal after contemplating firing him. After 7 years, they will finally fire him after 1 playoff appearance and some 7-9,8-8 and 9-7 years. Vintage Lovie |

His teams routinely competed for best rated defense more years than not. Despite mediocre offensive talent throughout his tenure, none of whom went on to flourish with other teams (as evidence of their mediocrity and ineptness), he still managed to drag the Bears to a super bowl and another championship game. I don't know what about Lovie blinds guys to the fact that he was the best Bears coach the city has had since the '80s, and that he left very large shoes for Trestman to fill. Rather, the vintage Lovie is the one whose defense never collapsed the way this year's did, and the one whose defense most likely would have made a difference between winning the division or going home this year. |

You think Lovie could have saved this aging defense this year with the number of key injuries they had? That's what a fool believes, Loggins! |

It seemed to me Lovie made chicken salad out of chicken shit more times than not (rosters were weak) but it was time for a change, that simple. |

Fair or not injuries on offense to Cutler and Forte cost the Bears a playoff spot his last 2 seasons. If they stay healthy (especially Cutler) the Bears make the playoffs and Lovie is still coach. The defense still would have declined (I thought it would his last season and it didn't) but the decline wouldn't have been as steep. |

It was time to go and most of those teams didn't have a lot of overall talent. Look at some of those rosters. He maximized the talent but his failure to fix the offense was enough to lose his job. |

No, they would not have been a top 15 squad in my opinion on defense. But they wouldn't have collapsed like this either. We know what the "floor" is for a Lovie defense in a bad year. There was a basic core competency his coaching brought to the table, and that was obviously missing this year. Even without Tillman this is the same secondary that helped comprise the third best D last year, for example, despite well known issues with the safeties. No way it goes to last from third under Lovie. |

There will always be stupid team owners willing to throw millions at mediocrity. Just look what the Bears did today. |

I think Robbie Gould led them there. |

TB was a better team than their 4-12 record suggests. They had the Jets beat in week 1 until a stupid out of bound penalty put the Jets in FG range with little time left. They played the Saints and even the Seahawks @Seattle tough (2 and 3 point losses respectively) and beat the Lions in Detroit back when the Lions still looked like a playoff contender. And they have a relatively easy schedule next season. Lovie could be 2014's Andy Reid. Wonder if they'll go QB with the 7th overall pick in the draft. |

They have to decide what they want to do at QB and they have many holes to fill. Revis deal has to be redone. |

Vegan, I fought these battles over and over again. We all know that the team that wins the turnover battle is best positioned to win an NFL game. Lovie's teams had more turnovers (by a wide margin) during his tenure than any other coach. He preached a frustrating (to fans) bend don't break defense. But along the way, his teams were able to generate lots of turnovers. You correctly note that he had little in the way of offensive talent. I always like Lovie. I think people "hated" him because he never said anything of note during a press conference. |

I have higher expectations. The Bears missed the playoffs in 5 of Lovies last 6 years & he had a winning record in just 5 of his 9 seasons. That doesn't even qualify as mediocre. Why any NFL team would pay this guy $5 million is beyond me. |

Also while we're talking about mediocrity, did you want to rethink your satisfaction with the Bears' collapse this season at 8-8, while a first year coach like Chip Kelly is enjoying his view from the playoffs despite having a less talented squad than the Bears? |

This is not about whether he deserved to be fired, it's more about whether he's a very good coach or not. In terms of leadership and defensive expertise, I think he's right at the top of the list. Unfortunately for him he never was able to transfer his obvious talents to the offensive side of the ball. |

No. I'm a big fan of Trestman and his approach. Sure I was disappointed in the Bears finish, but when a team is rebuilding with a new regime you gotta look at the long term. I'm also a big fan of Kellys. The Eagles certainly benefited by playing in an awful division. |
