Why would dunking a football over the goalpost for a TD celebration be a penalty but jumping into the crowd is not? I would wager that from a safety perspective, the Lambeau Leap is much more dangerous for the player (and even the fans) than the crossbar dunk isn't it?

I think the issue is they don't want players to break the goalposts like Jimmy Graham.

Plus with them adding an extra 5 feet or whatever to the post, seems more probably that some idiot could snap the thing in half.

Dr Ken is right, it's about messing with the goalpost. And even the No Fun League knows better than to mess with the Lambeau Leap.

The NFL doesn't give a shit about player safety unless they are forced to deal with an issue.

Has the Lameau Leap ever harmed a player? It's not like they are head-butting the wall.

Pretty sure not but it always seemed to me a team would worry one would pop a back disc or something really freakish.

 I guess. I really don't see that happening at Lambeau to a Packer though. It's not the Cell.

Conversely I don't think anyone got harmed by dunking either. Or with a sharpie. It's just more odd inconsistancies from the NFL.

Jimmy Graham fucked it up for everyone on his dunk which took 15 minutes to re-level the posts

One delay and they ban it permanently? Seems like an overreaction. The 'dunk celebration' has probably been done hundreds of times and this is the only instance where I can recall a delay. Probably had more to do with the uprights needing repairs prior to the dunk rather than Graham dismantling it.

Robert Wadlow could dunk without leaping.

The Bears should have signed him to block field goals.

As alluded to earlier, other celebrations are banned as well. A celebration using the ball as a prop for example. So the point, apparently, was to get rid of touchdown celebrations. However, it remains legal to jump into the crowd, the only time (and place) in professional sports in which jumping into the crowd (as opposed to say falling into the crowd, a la 3rd baseman chasing a pop foul down the line falling into the crowd at a low wall or something) is not punished. Therefore, it occurs to me that it is somewhat hypocritical to allow jumping into the crowd to celebrate a touchdown as there is potential danger for both player and fan, but it is illegal to mime making a cell phone call with a football.

They'll eventually get rid of that too. It doesn't have to be one or the other. The "prop" thing was already written into NFL rules a while ago, if I remember correctly. The goal post thing makes a lot of sense. Nobody wants a longer game or equipment damage for no reason. Pleanty of ways to celebrate without using the ball or goal posts.

The leap thing will go away when a player punches someone in the crowd. Then any contact with people in the stands will be forbidden. Coming soon...
