Quote:
The National Football League doesn't usually pay the act that performs at halftime during the Super Bowl. But in a twist this year, the league has asked artists under consideration for the high-profile gig to pay to play, according to people familiar with the matter.

The NFL has narrowed down the list of potential performers for the 2015 Super Bowl to three candidates: Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Coldplay, these people said. While notifying the artists' camps of their candidacy, league representatives also asked at least some of the acts if they would be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig.

The NFL is kind of the worst.

If I was in a band, I would jump to agree to this only if the NFL gave me 1% of their ad revenues sold during the Super Bowl pre and post game shows, as well as during the game. If the NFL gave me that, then I would give them a cut of my band's 'Super Bowl' income.

The NFL is king, but the certainly are not acting like it lately. This is pretty fuckin stupid.

I believe most opening acts for headliners give a deposit against earnings, just to make sure they show up, because all the promoter cares about is that a warmup act is there.

I have a feeling someone in the NFl picked up on this .

Eh... if the artists don't want to, they won't.

Well, then they should have thought it over some more.

There's a significant % of viewers that tune-in just for the halftime show. It's probably on a level of the game itself.

Its nowhere near the % of viewers who tune in for the game.

I never watch the halftime show or commercials ..most people don't.

Except 115 million people watched the halftime show this year, which was more than the average for the Super Bowl itself.

Could be that the game was out of hand by halftime.

All the good commercials run in the first half so people tune out.

I will say I generally never watch SB half. But for some reason did this past one and Bruno Mars did a good job.

You do realize that opening up for Pearl Jam or The Rolling Stone at the United Center in front of ~18K people is a lot different than being seen by at least 100 times more people by playing at the Super Bowl, right?
