NFL owners will vote in March on a proposed new playoff system that will expand from 12 teams to 14 and include reseeding, ESPN reported Sunday.

A formula that owners will discuss is that, in addition to first-round byes for the teams with the best record in the AFC and NFC, two divisional champions in each conference will be guaranteed a home game. The remaining four teams in each conference will be seeded based on win-loss record.

The idea of reseeding teams was previously tabled by owners. However, supporters of the proposed system believe that expanding the postseason will be a positive change from the current system.

The winner of the NFC South will have no better than an 8-8 record this season. That has led to criticism of the current format because all division winners are rewarded with a home game, regardless of record.

Since 1990, the league's postseason format has included 12 teams.

There's at least one well below average team getting in without expansion this year.

the tournament > the regular season! tho i enjoy the hell out of the regular season for fantasy football, so if this means more teams are "all in" like the 2012 white sox then i'm all for it. why not? you've already got people crying about 5-8-1 division leaders (at the moment anyways) and those 2010 seahawks that went 7-9 won a playoff game to face the bears coming off of a bye week, so you never know. the good teams will get in the playoffs regardless of this and if there's a greater chance some sub-/.500 team can go on a 4-5 game winning streak and go to disneyworld, welp, why the hell not?

look at how bud fell in love with the drama of game 163 and decided to double the # of wildcards and have mandatory game-163 "win and you're in" games to supposedly "give a reward to division winners" --- tv networks love single elimination games and since in the end the NFL is a support that's SUPPOSED TO be viewed on television (beerstain would never lie to me!) really why the hell not?

just think the bears might not be mathematically eliminated right now if we had 14 team playoffs! ok with the NFC west having two 9-4 teams behind a 11-3 team and the packers 9-4 with detroit looking to go to 9-4 we'd still be fucked, but still.... rewarding mediocrity is what our society as a whole is about in the year of our lorde 2014!

The INVENTION of letting more teams into a playoff scenario is really something that takes a MENSA member to come up.

When I hear anyone tell me "Look what Bud did" (That includes Bud) I throw up a little, as if these guys are the only ones who even thought about it, in between nuclear fusion and dark matter discussions.

Before the NCAA does it and Condoleza Rice takes credit for it, I think they should have a wildcard game...IF THEY WANT IT!
